well the utility truck and the snow plower were 4x4s and that didn't help at all. It's not that. It's the fact that the taxi driver is the only one who is not braking and actually accelerating and steering to the right direction.

They are all doing the same beginners mistake (except the cab driver). They automatically break to stop and turn the wheels left or right, because they have the sense of moving, instead you should keep the acceleration steady and turn away from the pile up.

My last trip to Montreal when it snowed grabbed a coffee then found a spot at the top of a hill and was entertained for a good hour! So far 4 for 4 with good snow for winter trips! The 1st time it started at 6 pm on a Monday and stopped about 8 pm on the Wednesday! February is the only month I have not been there!

Look at the taxi please. He stopped, because he didn't lock his wheels! Locking your wheels only makes you loose control of your car and you don't actually stop, pumping your breaks like the taxi did is the way to go. That's why new cars have ABS breaks.

I was stuck on I-75 about 25 years ago on ice ALL night (on a steep approximately 1/2 mile hill). The sand/salt trucks went BACKWARDS up the hill spreading rock salt as I remember. They made it and so did about 100 tractor trailers, cars, vans and pickups.

First snows are the worst. Nights are under 0 and days are over 0. The ground gets very cold and when this very wet snow (or rain) hits it, it freezes instantly into a very thin and very slippery layer of ice. Then, some snow covers it and it's completely undetectable. Add a slope and it's almost impossible to break, no matter what kind of tires you have. I prefer to drive in a snowstorm at - 30°C than today's wet snow fall.

Some work trucks I have seen have part of their rear end sticking out, if that bus where to hit, that part of its rear body would penetrate the front of that bus up to 5-6 feet inside the front of the bus, a potental life threatening encounter for the bus driver and possibly others standing in the front, yet these trucks have already passed the safety inspection in Canada; so much for this reactionary social organization

Regarding the comments, I think that instead of braking and thus locking the wheels, keeping on accelerating and steering the car away from the pile-up may have helped. Though I must confess I too would've made the same mistake simply out of lack of knowledge [read: ignorance] and experience--I've never been in such a situation before. Good to know I learnt it that way.

Driving is just one of my winter gripes, but they say "just don't be a terrible driver lol" 1.) Even if you're a great driver, you can not control for other terrible drivers 2.) Oh my God!! Just realized halfway through watching that this is HERE in MONTREAL!! The salt trucks were obviously missing in action yesterday!! :( Jesus! My own driveway, by late afternoon, was equally icy, but I expected the STREETS to have been in better shape! That hill and others adjacent to it are downtown, which is half way up a slope. It is scary to drive on in winter, I must admit. I've driven it many times! Glad I wasn't there yesterday though, OBVIOUSLY! If this happened on Beaver Hall Hill though, I wonder what happened on Fort, which goes down to the entrance to Highway 20?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O_O Vikes!

Chains are not allowed in Quebec except for very specific vehicles (like emergency vehicles). Snow tries do not help under those conditions, and this is a very very steep street. Also it looks like the city forgot to salt it, because the other side of the road is fine, so it probably surprised the drivers. Tl;DR easy to comment from your living room, but I'm sure you could have been caught in there too.

After I seen this my next winter trip grabbed a coffee then found a spot at top of hill and was not disappointed! So far 4 for 4 with snow for winter trips ! My last trip in June some drunk decided to do a pole dance around midnight. He lost grip mid swing he hit a fire hydrant ass 1st then he hit the ground! He got up real fast and no shortage of people laughing. That was barely a hour after I got there! Been there about 30 times since 2008 and never disappointed!
