Ward was previously with the band Rodriguez, which included bassist Kyle Field (of Little Wings fame) and drummer Mike Funk. They recorded and released on cassette Box Plots and Cash Crops and then the album Swing Like a Metronome in 2000. Duet for Guitars #2 was released on Howe Gelb's Ow Om record label. Ward's 2001 album, End of Amnesia, was released by Future Farmer Records, and his subsequent albums have been released on Merge Records. A collection of live recordings, Live Music & the Voices of Strangers, was a self-released disc that was sold at his shows. His next album, Transfiguration of Vincent, was released in 2003, followed by Transistor Radio in 2005. A year later, Post War was released.
In 2006, he contributed a song to, and helped produce, the John Fahey tribute album, I Am the Resurrection. He also contributed the song "Transfiguration #1" from Transfiguration of Vincent to the Brushfire Records soundtrack for A Brokedown Melody, a Jack Johnson surfing film.
His album, Hold Time, was released in 2009. The album A Wasteland Companion followed in 2012. The album title alludes to T.S. Eliot's 1922 modernist poem, The Waste Land. In 2016, he released More Rain. On June 8, 2018, M. Ward released What a Wonderful Industry.

Confession
M. Ward Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Anybody got a pain in their heart?
There's a place you can hide
When they conspiring against you
Confession
Somebody and nobody can save today
Somebody made love it goes all the way
Where I know they'll never find you
Confession, confession
Now I'm on the low
Confession, to a virgin ghost
Admission, force you know
Admission, of what you do
Anybody missed the train that left at the station?
Anybody lose a ticket stub and go home?
There's a place you can go
When you wander too far from home, yeah
Confession, confession of the mother lode
Confession, to a virgin ghost
Submission, force you know
Admission, you can't do it alone
Confession, confession of the mother lode
Confession, to a virgin ghost
Submission, you wanna get back home
Admission, you can't do it alone
Confession, I'm forced to leave
Confession, you'll know what it is
Admission, but you know it's true
Admit that it don't come from you
These lyrics from M. Ward's song "Confession" are open to interpretation, but they convey themes of vulnerability, seeking solace, and finding redemption through confession.
In the first verse, the lines "Anybody got a load that they need lifting? / Anybody got a pain in their heart?" suggest that the song is speaking to anyone who is burdened or emotionally wounded. The following line, "There's a place you can hide / When they conspiring against you" implies that confession offers a sanctuary or refuge from those who may be working against you. This part highlights the idea that confession can both provide relief and protection from external pressures.
The second verse starts with "Somebody and nobody can save today / Somebody made love it goes all the way." Here, the lyrics suggest that nobody and somebody refer to different aspects of oneself. It implies that in some situations, no external force or person can save you, while in others, the power of love can extend and offer salvation. The line "There's a place you can go / Where I know they'll never find you" reinforces the idea of confession as a safe space, where one can find solace and evade scrutiny.
The third verse introduces the line "Anybody missed the train that left at the station? / Anybody lose a ticket stub and go home?" These lines can be interpreted as references to missed opportunities and feelings of regret. The subsequent line "There's a place you can go / When you wander too far from home" suggests that confession provides a way to find your way back when you feel lost or disconnected.
The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the significance of confession. Lines like "Confession, confession of the mother lode" and "Submission, force you know / Admission, you can't do it alone" highlight the transformative power of confessing one's truths and embracing vulnerability. The lyrics imply that through confession, one can confront their flaws and seek redemption, acknowledging that personal growth cannot be achieved in isolation.
The final lines, "Confession, I'm forced to leave / Confession, you'll know what it is / Admission, but you know it's true / Admit that it don't come from you," encapsulate the internal struggle of confessing. They indicate that confession can be difficult, but it is essential for personal growth and acknowledges that the truth revealed might not align with our self-perception or desires. It suggests that true confession leads to self-realization and acceptance.
Overall, these lyrics explore the significance of confessing one's burdens and fears, highlighting the potential for healing, redemption, and self-discovery. The song encourages listeners to embrace vulnerability and seek solace through confession.
