Oh Lonesome Me
M. Ward & Jim James Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody's going out and having fun
I'm just a fool for staying home and having none
I can't get over how she set me free
Oh, lonesome me

A bad mistake I'm making by just hanging around
I know that I should have some fun and paint the town
A love-sick fool, it's blinding, just can't see
Oh, lonesome me

Well, I'll bet she's not like me, she's out and fancy free
Flirtin' with the boys with all her charms
Oh, but I still love her so and brother don't you know
Well, I'd welcome her right back here in my arms

There must be some way I can lose these lonesome blues
Forget about the past and find somebody new
I've thought of everything from A to Z
Oh, lonesome me

Well, I'll bet she's not like me, she's out and fancy free
Flirtin' with the boys with all her charms
Oh, but I still love her so and brother, don't you know
Well, I'd welcome her right back here in my arms

There must be some way I can lose these lonesome blues
Forget about the past and find somebody new

I've thought of everything from A to Z
Oh, lonesome me, oh, lonesome me, oh, lonesome me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to M. Ward feat. Lucinda Williams's song Oh Lonesome Me convey the singer's feelings of isolation and heartbreak after being left by his love. He begins by acknowledging that everyone else seems to be having fun, but he is unable to do the same because of the pain he feels. He reflects on his bad decisions to stay home and wallow in his sorrow instead of going out and trying to move on. The chorus repeats the phrase, "Oh, lonesome me," emphasizing his loneliness and heartache.

I love that it sounds like he's using old & dirty strings. As a guitarist there have been many times where I could feel and hear that grit of sliding my fingers over the old strings... a small touch that really hits home on that "lonesomeness".

Suite Lane

Such a beautiful and elegant cover of Don Gibson's classic!! Neil Young's and this cover are my favourites so far!!

TheMan FromAspen

wow never heard of this guy before but this version is powerful  thanks for posting and merry Christmas to everyone

they appropriately drag the crap out of this. Production is lush and right on. The background textures really carry the dynamics of this tune. Beautifully done. I too thought Neil's version was it, and I still do, but this is a close 2nd.

Until a few moments ago, I was convinced that Neil Young's version was best..but this is just breathtakingly achingly beautiful

who would dislike such a gentle and strong tune?

The first time I heard this, I cringed, but I love Lucinda and downloaded it from iTunes. It really took me a couple of times listening to it to "get" it. Once you get your head out of your ass, forget about how it's "supposed to be sung", and actually listen to it, you will realize it's a brilliant interpretation of a classic. And at the end, he just sort of stands back and lets Lucinda carry it out. I love this version!! And now I want to know more about M Ward.

Johnny Bitter

In the middle of this analysis the writer starts projecting on the reader by saying "you".

I actually loved this from very first listen. I guess my head wasn't in my arse unable to hear? Jacinda can raise sensual out of sadness, quite the goddess! <3
