Mr. Raven
MC Lars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We got EAP in the house tonight, Edgar Allan Poe.
America's favorite anti-transcendentalist.
We're taking this back, way back, nineteenth century style.

[Chorus]
Who's that (who's that) rapping?
Who's that rapping at my chamber door?
Mr. (mister) Raven!
All up in my grill like, "Nevermore."

Kick it! Once upon a midnight dreary, while I kicked it weak and weary,
Dark and cold just like Lake Eerie, Brand New sample, someone clear me.
While I nodded nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping.
Up like, "What?", this thunder clapping in my brain like graphic Halflings.
Staffing me, I put down Milton. Cell phone mute like Paris Hilton.
Open window, halfway built-in. Times a changing like Bob Dylan.
Twenty-pound bird black as could be, cold feet cold eyes aimed straight at me.
Grim face, grim stare, death carnivore, quote that raven "Nevermore."

[Chorus]

I miss Lenore, my Annabel Lee, taken by angels from me.
Alone with books (hey that's me!), harbinger of death visiting me.
I said, "Can I help you, evil prophet? If you got a problem, look, I'll solve it."
He checked my hook, DJ revolved it, perched on Pallas, chalice dropped it.
"Tell me sir, please, if you can. Am I good or evil man?
What can I say, what can I do, when will I be rid of you?"
"Nevermore," quote he at me, hating on this fresh MC,
Satanic raven, Niche glee, killing me softly like the Fugees.
Now I feel worse, my verse is terse, joy inverse just like Fred Durst.
Call a nurse, disperse my thirst put this process in reverse.
Wish I'd had some warning first, MC Lars, '88 hearse.
Now I'll never be Slug or Murs, under that black raven's curse.
The ravens eyes still have the seeming of a demon that is dreaming,
Lamplight over him still streaming, hear my screaming, hear me screaming!
My soul still floats there on that floor and shall be lifted nevermore.
Afflicted calm, like Michael Moore, canonized piece, US folklore.

[Chorus]

Who's house? Raven's house!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to MC Lars's song "Mr. Raven" pay homage to the famous 19th-century poet, Edgar Allan Poe. Through the use of various references to Poe's works, MC Lars highlights his admiration for Poe's unique style and reflects on his own personal struggle as an artist. In the chorus, MC Lars portrays the image of Edgar Allan Poe's infamous raven, who taps at the chamber door menacingly, and repeats the phrase "nevermore." The raven symbolizes the artist's creative struggle to break free from the anxieties, depression, and existential questions that so frequently plague creatives. The song can also be seen as a reflection of MC Lars's own insecurities as a musician.

Throughout the song, MC Lars makes numerous references to Poe's works such as Annabel Lee, Lenore, Pallas, and Pallas Athena, which shows his deep understanding and familiarity with Poe's literary works. The mention of Bob Dylan also has significance as he was greatly influenced by Poe's works, particularly the poem "The Raven." MC Lars uses the reference of "nevermore" to show how artists can feel trapped in their creative endeavors, unable to break free from their own thoughts and insecurities.

In conclusion, "Mr. Raven" is a brilliant tribute to Edgar Allan Poe, his style of writing and his impactful works. It shows how the themes and ideas that Poe wrote about in the 19th century continues to be relevant in modern times, particularly among creative individuals who often struggle with their own self-doubt.

Same here and it is still more dope than my ride. 🚲

@DudeLongcouch

Classic Lars. I love the updated version with the Dead Milkmen too. I was lucky enough to see the Halloween show they did in Philly in 2013, and Rodney Anonymous told me a funny story. Apparently when they were working on the new version of this song, he had jotted down the lyrics in a notebook. His wife came over and started reading the lyrics over his shoulder, and she said to him, "Wow, this is the best song you've ever written!" And he had to tell her, "I didn't write it... Lars did" lmao, I will never forget that story

@mc_lars

Haha, I remember that!! That was a fun night... that was the night I tried to scale the Poe museum gate and Rodney reminded me that would be a bad idea, I could end up in federal prison. Memories!! 🀣

@DudeLongcouch

@@mc_lars Oh my god, that's hilarious! Good thing Rodney was looking out for you haha. You know what's funny? After the show that night, I got pulled over for speeding on route 30 on the way home. The officer asked where I was coming from, I said a concert in Philly. He asked who was playing, I said MC Lars. And he almost thought I was lying to him by making up some fake concert I had attended. He looked you up to make sure you were a real act, and then let me off with a warning. So we both almost got in trouble with the law that night 🀣

@mc_lars

@@DudeLongcouch That story is even funnier!! I do sound like a made up name for a rapper, hahaha. Thank you for sharing that!! LOL!!

@cherryrottn

Ahhhhh this one never gets old.

@Otaking009

Instantly transported to the first time I listened to the Laptop EP. Thanks for all the bops, Lars!
