Overall Meaning

The lyrics to MGMT's song "Inbetween The Liners" seem to be a commentary on the nature of rock and roll and the creative process. The opening lines reference the band's name and the idea that they have multiple minds working together to create music that is both unexpected and timeless. The reference to Aristotle and the nonsensical lyrics of old rock songs suggest that even the most profound thinkers may struggle to make sense of the art form.

The rest of the lyrics explore different aspects of MGMT's music, from the mysterious figure of Dan Treacy to the pop surf opera of "Siberian Breaks". The song seems to celebrate the unpredictable nature of creativity, with lines like "Never mix stripes and spots we're told. Ha. It's actually a beautiful clash." The final lines suggest that despite the struggles and victories in the music industry, sometimes all that's left to do is to sleep.

Overall, "Inbetween The Liners" is a poetic and thought-provoking reflection on the nature of art and the creative process.

This "song" has changed my perception of the Congratulations album. Now I see that MGMT tried to make one whole cohesive album without singles in a similar fashion as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Of course, business did not allow a lack of singles.I can finally see the genius in this album.

I bet Self-Titled blew your mind wide open like it did for me. And LDA. and In the Afternoon + As You Move Through The World (honestly their 2 best songs in my opinion). Animal Collective would probably interest you as well.

rizkunisnator

@mikeexits Oh yes. I really enjoy Animal Collective. I find myself coming back to their Campfire Songs album a lot

This is great! Listened to this album so many times but never stumbled upon this until now!

This first half of this song could've started Congratulations and the last half ended it making the whole project more complete sounding. Very interesting stuff and a preview of their third album's sound. Love MGMT

GuinTheKimmiDoll

The most meta song I ever heard

Symbiote Olloman

Well, I totally agree with you, I can tell you that here in Italy the only MGMT's song that has been played by the radio is "Time To Pretend", so MGMT are not very popular, and I discovered them and the other hits like "Kids" just listening to the album. Then I immediatly bought the "Time To Pretend" EP and "Congratulations" as soon as it came out, and I wasn't disappointed at all. Unluckly this video is blocked for copiright in Europe, and that's also why MGMT are not very popular here.
