Any Other World
MIKA Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In any other world you could tell the difference
And let it all unfurl into broken remnants
Smile like you mean it and let yourself let go

'Cause it's all in the hands of a bitter, bitter man
Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in
Take a bow, play the part of a lonely, lonely heart
Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in
To the world you thought you lived in

I tried to live alone but lonely is so lonely, alone
So human as I am, I had to give up my defenses
So I smiled and tried to mean it to let myself let go

'Cause it's all in the hands of a bitter, bitter man
Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in
Take a bow, play the part of a lonely, lonely heart
Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in
To the world you thought you lived in

'Cause it's all in the hands of a bitter, bitter man
Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in
Take a bow, play the part of a lonely, lonely heart
Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in
To the world you thought you lived in

Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in
Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in
Say goodbye

In any other world you could tell the difference

Overall Meaning

Mika's song "Any Other World" is a reflection on the loneliness and isolation that can come with being human. The song explores the idea that we all wear masks to hide our true selves from the world, but that sometimes it can be liberating to just be vulnerable and let go. The lyrics suggest that we are all at the mercy of larger forces and that sometimes we have to say goodbye to the life we thought we had in order to move forward.

The first verse sets the tone for the song as Mika sings, "In any other world you could tell the difference, and let it all unfurl into broken remnants". It seems like he is referring to the fact that we often fail to see the beauty and complexity of life because we are too busy trying to fit in and follow society's rules. Mika encourages us to "smile like you mean it," which might suggest that he is advocating for authenticity and vulnerability. However, he acknowledges that being human can be hard, and that often we have to deal with "bitter, bitter" people who can make life difficult.

The second verse is a reflection on Mika's own struggles with loneliness and his attempts to overcome it by being vulnerable. He acknowledges that he had to "give up my defenses" in order to truly connect with others. The repetition of the phrase "Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in" is a reminder that we all have to let go of the past in order to move forward, and that sometimes that can be a painful process.

Overall, "Any Other World" is a thoughtful and introspective song that offers a message of hope and resilience in the face of life's challenges.
