Their second mini album “Ammonite” (2003) debuted at #3 on the national indie chart and remained in the top 30 for six months. MONORAL Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Predators ready to enter
Sheeps, out of the enemy
Cannibals just like you and me
Waiting for you to exhale
What I wanted to inhale
Why do you carry?
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Stand to devour
Criminals ready to labour
Free, out of the colony
Animals just like you and me
Waiting for you to exhale
What I wanted to inhale
Constant air is out
Constant air is in
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Take your chances
Read my mind and
Close your eyes, just ignite
Just ignite, just ignite, just ignite
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Why do you carry all this sin?
Why do you carry?
Oh, you got it out, you got it on, you got in now
Oh, you got it out, you got it on, you got in now
Oh, you got it out, you got it on, you got in now
Oh, you got it out, you got it on, you got in now
The lyrics of MONORAL’s song Origin are enigmatic and can be interpreted in different ways. The first verse seems to describe a dangerous situation where predators are ready to attack and the singer sees themselves and others as prey. The sheep imagery can symbolize vulnerability, while the reference to cannibals suggests that people can be their own worst enemy. The second verse presents a different perspective, where the criminals are ready to labor, perhaps indicating that some people are forced into difficult situations that lead them to commit crimes. The reference to animals just like you and me implies that humans are not separate from the animal kingdom, and might even be worse in their behavior.
The chorus repeats the same question, "Why do you carry all this sin?" which can be interpreted in several ways. One way is to see it as a criticism of people who carry past mistakes, hurts, and regrets with them, instead of letting them go and moving on. Another interpretation could be that the singer is questioning the concept of sin and why it exists or applies to everyone, regardless of their actions. The final verse encourages the listener to take risks and trust the singer: "Read my mind and close your eyes, just ignite," which can be seen as a call to action or a symbolic invitation to explore new possibilities.
Overall, the lyrics of Origin challenge the listener to examine their beliefs about human nature, sin, and personal responsibility, with a mixture of imagery and ambiguity.
