Describing their music as a combination of “Funeral Pop” and “Dead Western”, MXMS made a vow to express their art as naked as it reads channeling artists like Johnny Cash, Nirvana, Serge Gainsbourg, Lush, Vast, and Enya.
Collaborating with designer Asher Levine for a “funeral” inspired fashion show for SS 2014, performing a series of shows at NYC’s immersive Sleep No More theatre, and playing LACMA’s (Los Angeles contemporary museum of modern art’s) annual Halloween Ball installation called “Haunted Screens” German 1920’s Cinema are just a few of the many events and performances MXMS has taken part of in efforts to jointly focus on music, fashion and cinema.
At the end of 2014, with a large collection of songs and a finished film script MXMS signed with boutique indie label Grand Jury Records. The music is earmarked for release early summer internationally via digital and vinyl with an accompanying tour.
“MXMS’s music frequently swells from lush yet painfully intimate lows to rousing and inspirational cinematic highs, demanding to be mined for a transformative film montage. The duo relishes straddling the fine line between light and dark–as well as navigating, and often deliberately disrupting, the fault line between their fierce desires to both shun industry norms, and to share their music with the world.” –Kurt McVey for Interview Magazine

MXMS Lyrics

I saw you standing there
I feel my heart beat
You light a cigarette
I'm only here for holiday
You smiled and looked away
"Why is Paris, so beautiful tonight?"
And I don't know what I can do
About the way I feel right now
And I don't have any idea who you are
Will you stay with me
Don't leave me alone
Will you stay with me
Tonight, don't go
Tell me something I don't know
Raise your arms and part the sea
Teach me how to love myself
Show my heart, the way to bleed
And I don't know what I can do
About the way I feel right now
I can't be without you
The lyrics in MXMS's "Paris" depict a chance encounter between two strangers in the City of Love. The first verse describes the singer walking alone on Rue Des Barres in Paris and seeing someone who catches their eye. The second line reveals that the person is a man and he proceeds to light a cigarette. The chorus shows the singer's vulnerability and uncertainty about what to do with their emotions. They express a desire to not be alone and to have the man stay with them, asking him to teach them how to love themselves and show them the way to bleed. The final verse repeats the singer's feelings of dependence on this stranger and an inability to be without them.
The song evokes a sense of longing and desperation with its haunting melody and melancholic lyrics. It touches on themes of loneliness, love, and self-discovery, as the singer seeks validation and acceptance from this stranger they just met. The setting of Paris adds to the romantic atmosphere and enhances the emotions portrayed in the song.

I was recently near death with a bad case of pneumonia. I heard this song while semi conscious and thought it was a dream. Coming back to this world knowing that this song is real, I think I'll stay. There is so much beauty in these short minutes.
