In 1994 and 1995 they won the Brit Award for Best British Dance Act. In 1994, they won the Mercury Music Prize for the album Elegant Slumming. The victory sparked controversy as they beat Britpop band Blur, who were deemed by critics to be more 'worthy' than a mere dance band. With ten Top Ten UK singles, the band was one of the most consistent hit-makers of the 90s, and the album Bizarre Fruit stayed in the UK charts for two years.
In the United States, their biggest success was on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, where they achieved five Top 5 singles, four of which hit number one.
With the closure by BMG of the deConstruction dance record label in the late 1990s, M People gained their own record label called M People Records to release their 1997 album Fresco.
After the release of The Best of M People in 1998, the band took a long break. Heather Small recorded a solo album and it seemed that the band had split, although a repackaged greatest hits album was released in 2005 and the band also embarked on a short tour of the UK. Small continued to pursue a solo career, as her song Proud was the soundtrack to the successful London 2012 Olympic Bid.

Smile
M People Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I know you feel the same way too.
A kiss to wipe away the tears
Can`t keep on pushin` back the years
We gave up this thing long ago
Just like the stream forever flows.
I`m trapped in a kitchen can`t stand the heat
Like tears falling from a wounded sky
Let`s leave it here it`s time to say goodbye.
You`re not the man who used to make me smile
Oh no.
I guess I should be movin` on.
You`re not the man who used to make me smile
Oh no.
I guess I should be feelin` strong.
Would it make you happy if I said I cared for you
Oh no.
Spread my warmth around you in the cold night air.
Walk with me up to the edge
Looking over at our life ahead.
I may seem a fool to you
In everything I say or do
But I know this is our fate
I think we`re past the sell-by date
The encores through, the show at an end
Consign me to history but stay my friend.
Stay my friend
You`re not the man who used to make me smile
Oh no.
I guess I should be movin` on.
You`re not the man who used to make me smile
Oh no.
I guess I should be feelin` strong.
The song "Smile" by M People is about realizing that a relationship has come to an end and it is time to move on. The lyrics speak of looking back at the time spent with the person, but acknowledging that both parties feel that the relationship has ended a long time ago. The singer knows that it is time to say goodbye, and that it is not a defeat nor a devotion. The relationship has reached its sell-by date, and it is time to move on.
The lyrics are full of imagery, such as a wounded sky, tears falling, and looking over at our life ahead. The singer is trying to convey the emotions of a breakup through these images. There is a sense of sadness, but also a recognition that it is time to move on and let go. There is also some hope that they can stay friends despite the breakup.
