Howl
MaMuse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What lives below this granite crust
Flourescent moss and rose-tinted brush
Mid-afternoon
The season is early winter
The larch are gold and becoming, on a northern slope
My feet dangle over the edge
Will you throw me a rope
They say that it's an Indian summer
And 'though I'm tired of being the wind
I'm howlin' again
Oooh, ahhh. . .

I listen for the owls breaking
Of midnight bones
I listen for the messages that speak
From my own
And 'though I don't know what time it is
I know I am alone
And 'though I'm tired of being the wind
I'm howlin' again
Oooh, ahhh

The sky is sighing snow
I'm singing in harmony
Take a bit of refuge
Beneath an old weathered tree

And slowly, slowly I befriend the wind
Ooh, ahh

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of MaMuse's song Howl begins with the singer describing their surroundings, which appear serene and peaceful. They describe what lies beneath the surface, suggesting that even though things may seem tranquil, there is much more happening below the surface. The singer calls out to their companion, asking them to throw them a rope, suggesting that they may be struggling or need help. As the season changes into an early winter, the singer takes advantage of the moment by reflecting on the beauty of the world around them. They describe the larch trees as being golden, and with their feet dangling over the edge of something, they request assistance from their companion by asking for a rope.

In the second stanza, the singer listens to the sounds of the night, hoping to hear messages that are meant for them. They acknowledge that they do not know what time it is, but they are aware that they are alone. The singer feels as if they are just the wind, implying that they have no direction or purpose. The final stanza begins with the singer describing the snow that is falling from the sky. They sing in harmony, providing a stark contrast to the snow's sigh. The singer takes refuge under an old tree, gradually starting to make peace with the wind.
