Career
Mac Dre's music gained popularity in the early to mid 1990s throughout the Bay Area, eventually receiving national recognition through his independent record labels Romp and Thizz Entertainment. He released many hit singles, such as "Too Hard for the Radio", and most recently "Feelin' Myself". He was the creator of the "Thizzle Dance", a popular dance which holds no specific standard. Hardship and controversy were staples of Mac Dre's career. After recording his first three albums between 1989 and 1991, Mac was charged with conspiracy to commit bank robbery. His record label, Romp Productions, and his many references to "Romper Room" in his songs, coincided with a Vallejo robbery gang of the time calling themselves the "Romper Room Gang" and responsible for the robberies of many area banks and pizza parlours. Hicks was alleged to be a member of the gang. The rapper was sentenced to five years in prison in 1992.
In prison, Hicks gained some notoriety by recording the lyrics to songs directly over the Fresno County jail inmate telephone. His album, Young Black Brotha, was a result of such efforts, as well as guest appearances on fellow artists' songs, all while Hicks was still imprisoned. A later album, Back 'N Da Hood, was also made up of these prison-recorded songs.
After his release from prison in 1996, Mac Dre began releasing albums steadily, building pace in the early 21st century. Mac Dre's audience was growing, and mainstream hip-hop stations were beginning to give Hicks' music more airtime. Hicks relocated to Sacramento, California in 2001, where he began a label, Thizz Entertainment.
Death
On November 1, 2004, Mac Dre was shot to death while returning to his hotel after a performance in Kansas city. A car pulled up next to the white van carrying Dre along with other Thizz artists. Whether words where exchanged or not, the ordeal ended in the bloodshed of a bay area rap legend. The van swerved off the road and into a ravine where it ran into a tree. Word is that Dre was thrown from the van, but officials say they found him in the front seat, dead on arrival. Some believe that Mac Dre's killer was Kansas City rapper Anthony "Fat Tone" Watkins. In 2005 Watkins was murdered, allegedly by Bay Area rapper Mac Minister. In March 2006, Mac Minister was arrested by FBI officials.

Yep, Yea, Yep, Yea, Yep
Dont stop won't stop won't quit
Never could never would
Mac Dre back wit some more shit
You know (yadida mean, yadida mean)
Come on man
(verse 1)
And I'm back at it
Play me a beat with this heat I'm a blap at it
The cat scated, when the mac spatted
You don't want to see me, punk get your hat flatted
Dope like a crack addict, or a hop head
Spit it clear so you can hear, what I said
Pot head, hot head nigga that got dreads
Got bread stop red get hit with the hot lead
My bed, you might see three things
High heels, my pills, and hoes in G strings
I see things, through my pimpin glasses
Cheesy macaroni, teaching pimpin classes
I dips and mashes, Mercedes Benzes
Might wear stunnas without the lenses
I'm off the hinges I handle business
Leave no clues, witness, or forensics
No co-dependence all by my lonesome
Wont see Solano, Quintin, or Folsom
I ghost em, at the four way stop sign
Forty HK don't fuck with Glock nine
I rock wind, I'm a star I'm famous
Got my own language cool when I swang it
Oh, I'm all out the door
351 with the shift in the floor
(chorus 2x)
Come on you beezy lets do some grown shit
Put on a tight thong too small that don't fit
When I'm on the thizz I'm a fool I don't quit
Unborn kids, nut I own shit
(verse 2)
Dre rock rhymes from here to New York
Only smoke rope no coke or New Ports
Hubotchi Benihana pork on my fork
Rapping is a sport and this is my court
Do anything to win my referees cheat
I flagrant foul and bruise to beat
Read em and weap
I'm a royal flush
Give me some shrums
So I can get mushed
Kick dust, always in something tight
Hella loud with the whistle or the suction pipe
Fucking dikes, in Vegas or Reno ask Kilo, nigga he know
I'm well connected I know big wells
Did shows in harryels been in hella jails and federals
But nigga it never fails
The shit don't stop when I drop hella sales
Hella mail, call me the postman
From Vallejo born in Oakland
Yolking, Dodge Diplomats
Fuck three strikes get the bitch to bat
(chorus 2x to end)
The song "Grown Shit" by Mac Dre is a boastful track that highlights his rap skills and lavish lifestyle. The opening lines of the song introduce Mac Dre's determination to continue producing music and not quitting, demonstrating his relentless dedication to his craft. He goes on to refer to himself as a rap matic track addict, and he plays with the word "blap" to show how he can easily defeat anyone who tries to challenge him with a beat. He then brags about his ability to spot and avoid danger, warning his enemies that he could flatten their hats. He compares his rhymes to crack since they are addictive and bold.
In the second verse, Mac Dre continues to assert his superiority and confidence, stating that he only smokes rope - a slang term for high-quality bud - and eats at expensive restaurants like Benihana. He repeats the theme of competition, comparing rapping to a sport, and referring to himself as the king of his court. He mentions his willingness to cheat and even physically harm his opponents to win, and his disregard for the consequences, whether legal or personal. Despite his on-the-edge lifestyle, Mac Dre has attained success, evident in his "hella sales" and "hella mail."
Overall, the song revels in the excesses of hip-hop culture, emphasizing the flaunting of material possessions, disregard for societal norms, and challenges to authority.
