The lyrics of Maciel's "A Felicidade" explore the ephemeral nature of happiness and the illusionary nature of the carnival. The opening lines set the tone of the song by juxtaposing sadness as never-ending and happiness as fleeting. Happiness is compared to a feather that is carried away by the wind, light and ethereal, but also brief and in need of constant wind to stay afloat. In contrast, the happiness experienced by working-class people during the carnival is portrayed as temporary and illusory. The hard-working people spend the entire year preparing for this moment of fantasy, but it all ends on Ash Wednesday leaving them with a sense of sadness and loss.
In the second part of the song, the lyrics compare happiness to a dewdrop on a flower, both ephemeral and shining. The singer's happiness, however, is only found in the eyes of his girlfriend, and he is chasing it through the night, seeking the dawn so that he can wake her up with the joy of love.
The song's main theme is the transience of happiness and the aimlessness of seeking it without purpose or meaning. It portrays the need for constant striving to keep happiness alive, but also highlights the importance of finding happiness in the everyday, in the simple things and in the people we love.
