Founding members Chuck Robertson, Sascha Lazor, Todd Rosenberg, Carter Benson and James Malis started the group in high school but the band's membership has changed frequently since its inception. Drummer Todd Rosenberg left the band in 1999, Benson left the band in 2002, and bassist Mark Iversen left the band in 2006. The current lineup consists of:
* Chuck Robertson (lead vocals/rhythm guitar/primary lyricist)
* Sascha Lazor (lead guitar/banjo/primary composer),
* Keith Douglas (trumpet/backing vocals)
* Ed Hernandez (trombone)
* Brian Flenniken (drums/percussion),
* Cris Badham (bass guitar).
The band used to play under the name The Ivy League, but in 1996 they changed their name after signing to the Honest Don's Records label to avoid confusion (and potential litigation) with two prior bands that went by the same moniker. The band's debut album, Quality Soft Core, was released the following year. After the release of the album, the band was signed to Fat Mike's label Fat Wreck Chords, through which the Mad Caddies have since released 4 studio albums, an EP and a live album.

Shaving Your Life

I packed my bags and said goodbye
I knew my mind was made up
And then she cried and asked me why
I had run
I heard the world calling my name
Had to find a better place
Had to take a chance and get away
Wake up to a different point of view
Look to my better half
But I don't see you
Five thousand miles away
I left a life of ignorance
I did not understand
But to me it makes more sense
Our lives go on
While we procrastinate
Feeling okay
Watching as the blue skies turn to gray
Got nothing to say
Later on a new spring morning
I felt my strength come back around
I knew id come full circle
Left with the wisdom that I found
I had to run
I heard my home calling my name
Back to a better place
Back to somewhere I knew I could stay
Watch days go by
While we procrastinate
Feeling okay
Funny how it all turns out
When you start to try
I don't know where to run
I see that place in front of you
The things I thought were not true
I see the fires burning you
Got nothing
to say
The song "Shaving Your Life" by Mad Caddies is a powerful story of a man who left his home to find a better place. In the first verse, the singer leaves early one winter morning, despite his loved one's tearful protestations. He is searching for a better life, something he feels is calling his name. The second verse, occurring five thousand miles away, reflects on the life he left behind, one of ignorance and procrastination. He's learned from his journey, aware that life goes on, no matter how much we avoid living it.
Throughout the song, the lyrical theme hints at self-discovery and taking chances to find something worth living for. The line "Funny how it all turns out, when you start to try," suggests that true growth and discovery come from taking a leap of faith and embracing change. Ultimately, the singer returns home, having come full circle, with newfound wisdom and confidence.
