Doc Marten Stomp
Madball Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Black N' Blue!
Black N' Blue!
They'd been talking us down for so long
I almost started to believe them all
Yeah, I know we've done some wrong
We've done some right too - life goes on
The self-righteous say, "You're far gone."
Well I'd like to say, "You're dead wrong."
You don't know us, or what we've become
Or what we will be - so mind your tongue
You could be staring down the barrel of a
gun
Instead you're listening to words from verse
and song
It's not tough-talk, it's evolution (What!)
It's a Black N' Blue revolution (Go!)
I'm in all black (like Cash!)
I'm ready-
Got my blue cap on...
(Steady!)
Lemme take this wild ride in stride
I'm in all black (like Cash!)
I'm ready-
Got my blue cap on...
(Steady!)
Lemme take this crazy ride in stride
Some never made it out alive
I do this for them - with pride
For the Black, the Blue
My brothers, the crew
For the Black, the Blue
The lost brothers, the crew
For the Black, the Blue
My brothers, the crew
For the Black, for the Blue
The lost brothers, the crew
(Doc Marten stomp!)
I do this for them!
I do this for you!
I do this for them, I do this for you
I do this for the Black, and the Blue!
I do this for them / (Now Who's all with
me?)
I do this for you / (Who's all with me?)

I do this for the Black / (Who's all with me?)
and the Blue! / (Who's all with me?)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Madball's song "Doc Marten Stomp" express the band's frustration at being talked down to by others for so long. The opening lines repeat "Black N' Blue!" which refers to the physical and emotional scars the band members have endured. The song acknowledges that the band has made mistakes in the past but also asserts that they have done some things right and have evolved, hence their self-righteousness is not justified. The band invites others to mind their tongues as they don't know who the band has become or will be. In the absence of being threatened with a gun, they urge others to listen to their words from the verse and song, a tool for creative expression. Then, the song points out that their style is not about tough talk but rather an eventual Black N' Blue generation, implying the song's message is a call to make the most of what one can grow to be.

The song seems to signify the band's rejection of being ostracized for their status as they do this for people who never made it out safely, for the Black and the Blue. The song emphasizes the lost brothers and the crew, a representation of the group's solidarity. The song's final repetition of "Doc Marten stomp" refers to the powerful footwear frequently worn by skinheads, a subculture that has embraced the punk scene for decades, allowing the listeners to perceive the song as being in solidarity with the skinhead community.

This video is one of the best if not THE best Madball video ever. A fantastic flashback of old times and new times. Love the images of the kids, the old school images, the pics of Vinnie with Freddy. Just fantastic. A massive tribute to the entire DMS crew.

The Video Editing has been exceptionally well done on this. The computer graphics art on those tattoo typefaces, the newspaper style stuff, and the locations are all well-designed. Especially in the case of a photo of Danny Diablo rolling past the screen, this music video's fantastic. "For the black, for the blue" is a lyric that Madball works nicely, leaving out all the hardcore violent aggression, coloring the distorted guitar sound, like subway hissing into a station.
