War Paint
Madeline Merlo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Its okay to not be okay
When even the air you breathe
Is just too much for your lungs to take
And all the words that you dont say
I hear your SOS on the radio
As you're driving away
C'mon pick up your phone
Dont have to face it alone
Im gunna fight with you and for you
Yeah i want you to know

I will stand your ground
Ill kiss your battle scars
And leave my XO mark till you can feel it
Can ya feel it?
You can call my name
Ill hold your hand grenade
Keep all your secrets safe 'til you can see me
Can you see me coming?
Running for ya dead of night
Can you hear me? Hola you're alright
Ill take your fears and wipe your eyes and wear it all like war paint
Wear it all like war paint, wear it all like war paint

I see gold, when you're black and blue
I love the colours burning beautiful that you wanna use
When all you want is to get out alive
You dont have to cry for me to hear
Your battle cry
C'mon turn on your light
I've been waiting all night
To fight with you and for you
When all your flags are white

I will stand your ground
Ill kiss your battle scars
And leave my XO mark till you can feel it
Can ya feel it?
You can call my name
I'll hold your hand grenade
Keep all your secrets safe 'til you can see me
Can you see me coming?
Running for ya dead of night
Can you hear me? Holla you're alright
I'll take your fears and wipe your eyes and wear it all like war paint
Wear it all like war paint, wear it all like war paint
Wear it all like war paint, wear it all like war paint

Overall Meaning

The song "War Paint" by Madeline Merlo is all about being there for someone during their darkest moments, and providing support when everything else seems to have failed them. The first verse conveys the message that it's okay to not be okay, especially when you're struggling with something that is making it hard to breathe. The lyrics try to connect with the listener, by acknowledging all the things they keep bottled up inside, and assuring them that their call for help has been heard.

The chorus begins with expressing the desire to stand by the person, to hold their hand through their toughest battles, and be there to comfort them through their pain. When they're feeling alone, they can call out for the singer, and she'll hold onto their fears like a grenade, listening to their battle cries and wiping their tears. She'll wear what's hurting them like war paint, reminding them that they're not in it alone. The song concludes with a promise of unwavering support, indicating that no matter how worn out they are from fighting, they're never in it alone.

Overall, the songpowerfully communicates the idea of being there for someone, even when everything else seems to have failed them. The lyrics are emotional, and act as an emotional charge to be strong and brave in the face of adversity.
