The spoken words in Madlib's song "Hopprock" take on a melancholic and mysterious tone as the singer relays an account of missed or withheld messages. The first four messages are deleted without being heard, conveying a sense of frustration or even avoidance. The fifth message, however, is left unheard despite being acknowledged through the phrase "calling again". The implication is that a relationship or communication breakdown has occurred, as the singer prepares to start afresh with the twenty-four remaining minutes of recording time.
The repetition of the word "but" in the later part of the song adds an element of uncertainty and unrest. Perhaps the singer is grappling with a decision or weighing their options, with the "buts" serving as a barrier to progress or clarity. Overall, the song creates a mood of reflection and introspection, with its use of voicemails and empty space suggesting the absence of meaningful connection in some way.
