Poison
Maduk & Gid Sedgwick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Slipping through my tongue
You′re my illusion and that's my drug
And there′s one too much
Only pain in love
Lost my sense of touch
This poison's lost in my blood

I guess I'm falling off the sword
I guess I′m dreaming I′m alive (alive, alive)
I guess I'm feeling out of sorts
Guess I need your poison
Guess I need your poison

Running through my veins
You′re my illusion and that's my drug
And there′s one too much
Only pain in love
Lost my sense of touch
This poison's lost in my blood

I guess I′m falling off the sword
I guess I'm dreaming I'm alive
I guess I′m feeling out of sorts
Guess I need your poison
Guess I need your poison

Ah-ha-ha
Ohh-oh-oh

I guess I′m falling off the sword
Guess I'm dreaming I′m alive
I'm still feeling out of sorts
Guess I need your poison

I guess I′m falling off the sword
I guess I'm drеaming I′m alive
I guess I'm feeling out of sorts
Guess I need your poison

Guеss I need your poison
Guess I need your poison

Overall Meaning

In "Poison", Maduk and Gid Sedgwick paint a picture of a relationship that has become toxic but despite the pain it causes, the singer is unable to let go. The opening line, "slipping through my tongue", suggests that the person they are singing about is always on their mind, and they cannot help but speak their name. They go on to describe the person as their "illusion and that's my drug", which implies that they are addicted to this person and the relationship they have with them, no matter how unhealthy it may be. The singer recognizes that the relationship is causing them pain, but they are still unable to let go, lost in the feeling, and now that pain has become the only thing they can feel. The repeated lines, "Guess I need your poison", emphasize the idea that the person has become like a poison to them, something that they know is harmful, but they cannot give up.

The chorus, "I guess I'm falling off the sword, I guess I'm dreaming I'm alive, I guess I'm feeling out of sorts, guess I need your poison", adds to the overall idea that the singer is lost in this destructive relationship. The metaphor of falling off a sword implies that they are in pain, and the "out of sorts" feeling suggests that they don't know what they want anymore. Yet, they still find themselves drawn to their partner, who they now see as the only solution, even if it causes them pain.

Overall, the song creates a sense of longing, addiction, and desperation. Despite recognizing the toxicity of the relationship, the singer can't help but continue yearning for it. The lyrics capture the feeling of being in love with someone who is essentially bad for us, yet we still can't let go.
