Their debut album Madvillainy was met with wide critical acclaim for its unique approach. Their short songs, obscure lyrics and sparse choruses made for a sound that was generally unfriendly to commercial radio, but was lauded as a key aspect of their identity as an underground act.

In 2006, Madvillain was featured on Stones Throw Records and Adult Swim's DVD/CD Chrome Children with a new song and live performance. Kidrobot followed this by announcing a Madvillain action figure.

On May 26, 2010, Madvillain released the song "Papermill" via Adult Swim's website. On January 3, 2011, Madvillain released the song "Avalanche & Victory Lap" via Stones Throw mixtape.

On 31 December 2020, Dumile's wife posted an image of MF DOOM on Instagram and Facebook stating that Dumile died on 31 October 2020 at the age of 49, which was later confirmed by his representative.

fun fact about the track "Fancy Clown", the track is actually rapped by "Viktor Vaughn", which is one of DOOM's countless alter-ego's. The whole track is an account of Viktor detailing a story in which DOOM steals his girl, hence bars such as "don't make me have to pound his tin crown face in" and "when u see tin head tell him to be ducking down" in reference to DOOM's metal mask of course.Really just a great, fun track where DOOM truly shows his unrivaled creativity.

To me MF DOOM's lasting legacy more than his wordplay, bars, flow, was his ability to use his low voice not only as an addition to the instruments but somehow instrumental itself to the core of his music. All rapper's do that on some level but something was special about how DOOM put his voice into something, imbuing it with personality and dry wit through a voice that is constant.

honestly anthony fantano explained it the best in his madvillainy classic review and his mf doom worst to best video. doom focuses on this fictional character so much and puts so much effort into it, that you literally want to be in this imaginary world he creates. its extremely vivid songwriting that gets you lost in the rapping.

MF DOOM has some of the most incredible rhyme schemes and wordplay in all of hip hop. He'll have lines where every single syllable rhymes and it all flows perfectly.
e.g.
"Hack'thooing" songs lit in the booth with the best hoes
Doing bong hits on the roof in the west coast

And he does it consistently over every single song. There's not a single weak moment in DOOM's rapping

The greatest part about this album in my opinion was DOOM’s lyricism. Some of the best metaphors double and triple entendres with very comedic or sometimes deep messages. If you miss out on this part of the album, you’re listening wrong.

Interesting that u mentioned that the vocal sampling in "Fancy clown" was like J dilla's. That's actually J dilla who was influenced by Madlib, that whole album was actually. 'Donut' wasnt necessarily j dilla's signiture production style or atleast it wouldnt encapsulate j dilla's catalog

danny brown, earl sweatshit, and tyler the creator were all heavily inspired by doom. you can really feel the similarities. Also the beats and music themselves are amazing but the lyrics, wordplay, and rhyme schemes are all incredibly unique and astounding. read the lyrics you’ll love them

Watching your videos makes me feel like I'm listening to the album for the first time again. This album is one of my favorites so this was a very fun episode for me, you always point out things in the production I never noticed before. Keep it up!

Also, I think you would enjoy the album 1999 by Joey Badass. More sample based hip hop with smooth lyrics, definitely worth a listen

loved your comments about hip hop at the end. if you want to hear some really good modern stuff, you should listen to taboo by denzel curry. denzel helped pioneer the trap sound and that album really shows his mastery of it. it's in turns incredibly smooth, incredibly aggressive, as well as really fucking witty with his bars.

MM..FOOD is the next one you gotta do from DOOM. He produced most of that album as well. The name of the album is an anagram for his rap name...mm food and MF DOOM. And every song is littered with food metaphors.

The 'sound collage' so meticulously crafted here is also expertly pulled off in the album "Since I Left You" by the Avalanches. I'd definitely suggest it if you wanna hear more eclectic soundscapes!

I don't know if anybody's recommended this to you, but if you're fond of post-rock, check out Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - more commonly known as just Silver Mt. Zion. Composed and created by a lot of the folks behind Godspeed You! Black Emperor but with a more concise, rock-oriented energy.

The album I would recommend most would probably be 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons, and Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything as second best.
