After the Pharrell video went viral, several different record labels tried to sign Rogers. She ended up negotiating a contract with Capitol Records where "she licenses her music to them through her own imprint, Debay Sounds." As a result, she has more control over her sound and image than many artists at a similar place in their music careers.
Rogers's EP, Now That the Light Is Fading, was released on February 17, 2017. She released her major-label debut album, Heard It In a Past Life, in January 2019. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200.
She made her television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on February 15, 2017, Saturday Night Live debut on November 3, 2018 and Today Show debut on July 12, 2019.
She cites Carrie Brownstein, Patti Smith, Kim Gordon, and Björk as her musical inspirations, while prominent singers Brandi Carlile and Sharon Van Etten - who she calls her "musical big sisters" - have become mentors. She also mentioned in her initial conversation with Williams that she has synesthesia, a benign condition where one or more senses is perceived at once. In her case, she is able to perceive colours as a response to hearing music.

The flight of the north moving birds
Steady
The echo, the great moving herd
They'll fly through the night
Fill their wings and their sights
With cold air and pale shadowed moons
Oh lover, kid you not
Though we promised a lot
I must fly from you
So hold me
Sing me to sleep
On the crest of a late breaking wave
And write me
Into your thoughts
I'll be safe with the words on the page
Shadow
The light plays its own little games
Dream world
Its own silent claim to remain
And it'll follow you still
Through the streams and the hills
And remnants of gold autumn leaves
Oh lover, you can walk
Oh your shadow still stalks
From between the trees
So hold me
Sing me to sleep
On the crest of a late breaking wave
And write me
Into your thoughts
I'll be safe with the words on the page
In "On The Page," Maggie Rogers explores themes of distance, separation, and the power of written words. The lyrics depict a sense of longing and the struggle to maintain a connection with a loved one despite physical separation.
The song opens with a reference to migratory birds, symbolizing the distance between the singer and their lover. The flight of the birds represents a journey, possibly referring to the singer's departure. The echo of the "great moving herd" signifies the collective yearning and longing for connection.
The chorus emphasizes the need for comfort and reassurance in times of separation. The singer asks to be held and sung to sleep, seeking solace and a sense of safety in their lover's presence. The metaphor of being "on the crest of a late breaking wave" conveys both the vulnerability and strength required to navigate the challenges of distance.
The second verse introduces the idea of shadows and the game of light. This could symbolize the fleeting nature of their relationship, as shadows are never constant. Despite the impermanence, the singer acknowledges that their presence will linger and continue to follow their lover.
Overall, "On The Page" captures the bittersweet emotions of being apart from a loved one and finding solace in memories, written words, and the idea of an enduring connection.
