A psychedelic rock band from US. Their first album, which was recorded in Florida, has become a collectors' item and is full of dual guitar work with the extended track Play the stand out song. They relocated to East Lansing, Michigan and Detroit to record their second album and whilst in Michigan they gigged with several local bands like The Rationals, The Woolies and Ormandy.
Joey Murcia was also connected with Florida bands. Ex-Birdwatchers and went on to play in Life. He later became a renowned studio musician, working with Jay Ferguson, Joe Cocker, the Bee Gees and Joe Walsh. Duane King moved to L.A. in 1972 and is still singing and writing songs. His brother Nick sadly died in a automobile accident in 1998.

Gavin actually talked on Maro's podcast about why they made Nalia a Rogue. From what I remember it was because Rogue was the type they had the most difficulty finding creatures for the deck so they made the face commander a rogue so you always had access to one.

Another piece of really good conditional ramp for the deck is Oketra's Monument, discounts all your white creatures by 1 generic and when you cast creature spells, which you definitely are going to do, you get a 1/1 WARRIOR token so it can help fill in the party too.

I feel like Nighthawk Scavenger is WAY better than you're giving it credit for. Yeah, counting up all the card types in your opponents' graveyards can be annoying, but 3 mana for what can very easily be a 6/3 with flying, deathtouch and lifelink is bonkers.

I love that the party mechanic is getting some serious buffs! Was kinda sad that we didn't see many of them in the D&D sets, but this commander deck definitely makes up for it! Hope to see more!

I have to really disagree with thinking Nalia isn’t great as a commander, and it’s because I have a feeling they didn’t actually play test the deck as is before upgrading. In my plays, it stood up very well against non-Budget decks and being able to see what you’ll draw next, even if it’s not a party card, is good information. The deck itself was well optimized in making sure you could get a full party surprisingly, especially with the changlings support and mutavault so unless there were multiple board wipes, I never had too much trouble getting full parties and pumping them at least twice.

Also, for the cuts where they said “Why are Angels in here” or “Warriors are very minor”, they clearly didn’t get that changeling was a huge sub-theme with this deck. When I had Firja’s out, I had 4 angels, three of them being changeling and after being pumped by Nalia, I was able to destroy three really powerful targets.

I would really kinda like a redo of this video using Nalia as the commander because I was excited to see what they would do for the party but it turned into another “treasure + card draw = good” that commander is turning into (which it certainly is, it’s just boring when all decks are like that)

Just got this deck and played about five games worth it straight out the box and absolutely loved it. I did use barakos but I got to play nalia in almost every game and it’s making me reconsider her as the main commander. Especially adding in more of the party members with flash

Honestly the cuts and additions for this deck were just really poor. I love how they had an extensive discussion about how hard it can be to fill your party, then they cut a creature that fills two slots because "all it does is fill out two slots on your party?" They had a couple of good additions, but overall this wasn't great.

And Serra's Emissary as an "alpha strike" when they establish you generally don't want more then 4 creatures on the board at any given time? Wtf?

Burakos is the much better commander and it’s not even close. You get ramp and card draw in spades in your CZ with Folk Hero, and I take that consistency over any amount of popoff Nalia can provide. She’s good in the 99 but Burakos/Folk Hero is so solid.

I personally would cut the sacrifice theme, party really wants to have creatures out and sacrificing your stuff feels counter intuitive. Also i prefer the initial leader as a commander because its both card draw and a win con. For my precon i cut a bit of the draw and added more ramp.

I've played this deck with both Nalia and Burakos and so far I've far prefered Nalia. Getting the treasure with Burakos means you have to attack -- and by the time you've played him out and can swing, there aren't always any options that won't get your commander killed. He's a 2/4. He's going to get curb stomped. He also won't help the rest of your team get through. With the background, you do get the one card draw per turn -- but then you're taking off turn 2 or 3 to play an enchantment when you could be playing more creatures or a mana rock. Nalia doesn't require any setup for the card advantage and you can cast more than one creature per turn off of the top of your deck. Getting a full party isn't hard at all with the changelings in the deck either. Toss in a little top deck manipulation and she's really solid.

There's a pretty nice combo with the commander they chose. Strionic Resonator + Clock of Omens. With a full party and 2 mana to activate the Strionic Resonator copying Burakos' ability the first time, you can then let the Strionic Resonator trigger resolve granting you 4 treasures and draining your opponents for 4. Then using 2 of the treasures, you use Clock of Omens to untap Strionic resonator and then with the other 2 treasures, you use the mana to activate Strionic Resonator again.

Just as a side note with Valiant Changeling, he comes down for WW if Burakos is out because Burakos has 5 creature types. I took him out of my Burakos build as well, but in the Nalia build he's decent because putting deeathtouch and giving him counters is pretty nice.

This - I was kind of surprised they took it out. I've seen others suggest taking some of the changelings out and I think that's a mistake - Burakos can make it a bit better if you don't have all four creature types compared to Nalia, but regardless of commander I think you care a little more about getting your party online and just a little less about the quality of the members. That said, 3/3 double strike for WW isn't bad either.

I don't think this upgrade guide understands the play pattern of the deck. You're playing a bunch of little creatures which need the counters and deathtouch from Nalia to go aggressive. If you want to upgrade it then lean into +1/+1 counters and swapping out some of the weaker creatures for stronger ones in the party types. I haven't checked the non-creature cards in the deck but probably protection and recursion would work well.

Definitely don't drop the card draw, because the curve is low and you want to rebuild the party after any board wipe. Also, don't drop party creatures which are good in combat and benefit from +1/+1 counters (e.g. the flying lifelinker or the 3/3 double strike changeling).

@@erickvanpatten673 What's interesting to me is how drastically different the reactions to the commanders were from MTG goldfish vs Command zone.

CZ saw Nalia as bad card advantage and a weak payoff, while the backup commander as excellent ramp and the background for better card advantage. Goldfish saw the backup commander as a 2/4 which somehow has to attack to actually ramp (both slow and super unreliable) while Nalia as 3MV (cheap) that helps you get out your cheap creatures faster and make the game plan work. They noted it basically enables your fun party deck to actually be threatening.

I think Goldfish were completely correct. The only thing good about the backup commander is the folk hero background. In order to play it as the commander you'd need to add in evasion, probably equipment and either things to ramp into, heavier hitting party creatures or cheap, value party creatures you churn through with folk hero. It's a very different deck from Nalia and not what party time is built as out of the box, from what I know.

@@Tvboy777 It seems like they assign one to each of the team members but whether that person gets to play test it varies. Ashlyn did get to play this one, but either she did the upgrade guide before playing or she was misdirected by the team that the backup commander was the way to go, so she never saw what Nalia was like and how the deck naturally functions.

So I think the people are invested, but it's their personal take on it and in this specific case something went wrong along the way.

The idea that Nalia is going to whiff on "all the creatures that aren't party classes" is silly. In a properly built Nalia deck, she's hitting every single creature in the deck. That is a very powerful effect out of the command zone. This is the whole deal with this deck: there simply aren't enough Party payoffs to make trying to assemble the party your whole goal. Instead, you need to be valuing off with Nalia and top of the deck manipulation like Haunted Crossroads or things of that nature. When you do get party, you get a nice bonus. It's not the whole plan, though. And Mindblade Render is a terrible cut. I don't know, this upgrade guide seems pretty pants.

I like this deck, party actually works pretty well in orzhov. Cutting Mindblade Render was interesting though...great card. Remember...its not just when YOU do combat damage to a player with a warrior, it's when any of your opponents are dealt combat damage by ANY warrior on the table. It draws a good amount of cards usually

I ended up putting in Shaile/Embrose instead to replace Mindblade Render. Shaile is great early game to build up your creatures and is also a cleric. Embrose, though he's not included in the party system, fills in for when you already have a board state and need some card draw value.

I've been playing this deck a bunch out of the box against my playgroup and Nalia has performed so much better for me. The orc doesn't pressure anyone and you don't really need the treasures because your creatures are so cheap to cast. Getting a full party is really easy with Nalia. you can generally curve out into it and once she pumps your board with death touch most people won't block her.

I disagree about Burakos being the commander. The problem is to make him good you have to attack. When I ran Burakos he just kept dying and I didn't get much value out of him. Once he is able to attack, there are already people casting 4/4's or greater making him die really fast. Plus because he is so much of a value engine, getting treasures, cards, and direct life loss, people just kept destroying him. This deck is about tapping creatures and hitting face. Nalia's deathtouch and +1/+1 abilities allow for you to more reliably attack. I also never had a problem building the party. As long as you have a few changelings, it is pretty easy. Also Nalia is less intimidating so people left her alone.

I think Burakos seems more like he'd be the commander if you were trying to tune the deck to an 8 or 9 power level, but the problem is this deck really caps out at 7. Don't get me wrong, it is still a fun deck to whip out and play with, just that I don't think we are ever going to get to a super high level of gameplay with this deck. So Nalia is the better choice.

@@MrNord-so3yp He's not though.. By himself Burakos isn't as good. He is only better when combined with Folk Hero. Then you are comparing a 6 mana value worth of stuff to a 3 drop. Not to mention unless you have a insane hand, he likely won't even get to attack until turn 4 or 5. You won't even get the benefit of Folk Hero until turn 5 or 6 too. By turn 3, I could already be attacking and getting the benefit of Nalia. Burakos and Folk Hero on the surface level seems great. You have Ramp and Card Draw, but when you think about how fast you are accessing those resources, he is slow and cumbersome in any really competitive game.

Again, neither of them will make your deck better than a 7. I just think Nalia is better overall. Most of your stuff is small and having a commander make it so your stuff gets bigger, can kill stuff when they attack, and overall makes your game more aggressive. It will give you the best chance to win.

Also the argument that Burakos needs to attack to generate value is fine you’re an attacking deck either way

A 4 mana 2/4 that nets you 1 - 3 treasures every go around? It ain't bad, but you aren't going to win any awards. The whole point of the deck is to build a party and once you do that with Nalia you are boosting your creatures and swinging for lots of damage. Not to mention you don't even have to attack with her.

I'll say it one last time. Party Time at its best is about being aggressive. Burakos is a great utlitiy commander and it is going to make you feel like you are doing a lot, but being aggressive is how you will win with Party Time. The longer the game goes on with Party Time, the more disadvantage you'll be since you aren't rocking a lot of big hitters or massive combos.

So taking out Mindblade Render is a mistake for sure. Warriors are kind of evergreen, spec with Render and Azra Oddsmaker being such a staple of rakdos decks, so Render will get you card draw on opponents turns as well.

add haakon, stromgald scourge and the tribal changeling instants and cast them whenever you want as much as you want from the grave. then you can shield of velis vel on your opponents creatures when they attack. nameless inversion and crib swap for removal whenever you need it. With maskwood nexus its recursion all day long

Burakos isn’t great as a commander. It’s a 2/4 for 4 with no evasion that you have to attack with to get any value. Nalia just sits there pumping the board and casting stuff off the top.

Burakos with folk hero out reads like beast whisperer except it has access to ramp if someone doesn't play 4/xs or you aren't pumping him

Haven't had much chance to play it yet but a Burakos deck with a whole lot of low casting cost party creatures and protection/evasion for the commander will get you not just mana and cards with folk hero, it gets you a reliable source of life drain. Your other creatures can sit back and block if they can't get through anywhere. And black has ways of capitalizing on the life drain. I think a good one is warlock class since the deck needs mana sinks to take advantage of the treasures and not commit too many creatures to the board.

I actually won a game with Firja's Retribution using this precon by tapping some changelings to get chump blockers out of the way with the second chapter on the saga. Still think it's probably a good card to cut though.

I also won a game with the precon partially because of Firja's Retribution. In response to the third chapter trigger I activated Mirror Entity for all my mana and had like 6 or 7 double striking 10/10s+

It's super good. It gives you a Warrior, 4/4 Angel with flying and vigilance that can tap to destroy a creature on chapter 2, and chapter 3 is insane if you put Sigarda's Summons in your deck.

played a minimally altered Burakos deck right at release day against constructed decks. Stick together was a brutal boardwipe. only one opponent got to keep a rogue and i wiped out over 100 creatures. excited to play a tuned one with the opposition agent/maralen lock alongside the Abdel Adrian finisher. I did this because i found it ridiculously easy to form a party but the deck lacked finishers.

Would love to hear JLK's take on some of the party cards in this deck for his Shadowborn apostle deck. I personaly bought this one just to get some cards for my version of it. Nalia, for example can let you play apostles from the top of your deck when you ar out of them in your hand. With her, Edgewalker and top (or some other top-deck manipulation) is basically GG. Even without the other pieces she helps finding that 5th or 6th copy when you are out of them in your hand. I don't know if this justifies sending Athreos to the 99 and letting Nalia be the commander but i'm gonna test it out.
An like her a number of the party cards ar incidentally great because they care about clerics. Solemn Doomguide is another example I'm trying. If you happen to be on the back foot with a lot of apostles in the graveyard this can help you unearth enough apostles for a key activation to steal a victory (for double the price sure but maybe its worth it your you have Cabal coffers)

I stuck with Nalia for my build, my problem with the backgrounds is you get a 2 for 1 when an opponent removes your commander. It affectively "turns off" your background and it is a dead card in play.

Backgrounds are free in terms of card advantage, you start with 7 cards in hand whether you have 1 commander in the zone or 2, so it's not actually a 2-for-1, even though it feels like it.

I might have left valiant changeling in due to the fact that with your commander out it would be 2 mana, also would allow you to play another creature type after, making burakos trigger for 3 treasures the 2nd turn after a board wipe... also a great blocker

I bought all ten of these cards, PLUS the two honorable mentions that were "too expensive" today at my LGS. Final price was about $50. Really not bad! Without the two expensive cards it would have only been about $20, so I think Command Zone plays it fairly conservative with their estimates which is always great to see.

I'm not quite sure why all (or at least three of) the Command Zone dislikes Nalia when she seems quite favored by others (myself included). It has to be a difference in the way they evaluate cards, which (even if you disagree) is interesting to try and understand.

Might be pod specific. I don't value top card play that highly. Her scaling is nice, but it's not that easy to assemble and maintain a full party to get it's affect. Burakos ramps you like crazy, which is what this deck lacks and then you go wide and draw like crazy with the background. All you need is avoidance for burakos and you're golden. Nalia is also great though. Just changes how you build the deck imo.

What do you think about Disciple of the Vault and Agent of the Iron Throne? You would get a nice additional value from sacrificing all those treasures. Also a nice sinergy with Pontiff of Blight's extort ability.
And what about Rouge's Passage and Access Tunnel? I think they're great to ensure you can attack each turn with Burakos.

to mention for those who are concerned there are infinite sac combos with nalia and haunted crossroads. Oketras monument + phyrexian altar + 1 mana party memeber(2 mana white party member) + crossroads = infinite sacs. For example life insurance/pitiless plunderer with a separate sac outlet also get you there or combination there of gets you infinite mana as well

I've to say that Nalia is bonkers. Burakos is more powerful, yes, but I tried Nalia in 1on1 a lot and its a crazy amount of damage you can deal with her in short time. I should probably mention that i am shifting more and more to a maybe 7 on the power scale. I liked the level of the initial precon(s)

7 on the power scale? Lol explain what 7 means to you because literally everyone calls their deck a 7. I'd say a 7 is clunky combos that kill the table or go wide into overrun effects kill the table, a lot of expensive staples and some fast mana. An average non land casting cost of about 3.
Battlecruiser makes up 1-5 - if you're using big fatties to deal fair damage to win there's no way you're above a 5. There are 10 points on a 10 point scale but EVERYONE calls their deck a 6-8 lol. Precons are a 1-2, there is no point having them higher because less than 1% of decks realistically are going to be weaker than a precon and they are the official starting point.
So many casuals lump so much into 10/10 or cedh and it's kind of ridiculous. There is a huge range in power that gets lumped into 10 and then everything else is a 5 or a 7 lol

I feel like they put a LOT of weight on Folk Hero when they cut some of the card draw/selection cards. Relying on only 1 (sometimes 2 with a flash creature) extra card per rotation is pushing it.

Imo, I play a few commanders with you may look at the top catd of your library, and I'd say Reality chip for Mono Blue and definitely Galea with Enchantments works well

Nalia would definitely need a lot more top-deck manipulation to be more viable. I've been playing with Galea a fair bit over the last year who has a very similar effect, and the most important things for consistency are ways to reset the top of the deck. Unfortunately Orzhov doesn't really have things like Augur of Autumn to clear out lands from the top of the library, but loading up on scry effects, deck shuffling, card draw, Scroll Rack is amazing, there's lots of effects in Black to mill the top card of your library, etc. can really give you a lot more topdeck hits than you might initially expect.

There play timing is all of for this deck. Glt this deck day one and have been playing it on stop. The play pattern is... turn two ramp. Turn 3 play your commander. Turn four play folk hero and one low cmc creater. Then attack. That way you get to draw, and get two treasure for the next tirm or for protection.

Hmm I just got this deck and I think Nalia is the correct choice. Add more top manipulation like scry and such and it should be good. Perhaps change some cards out for more powerful versions.

Burakos kann choose a background. The background card decides the second color. If you choose a white background like folk hero your deck will be black/white.

You pair Burakos with Folk Hero as the commander because Burakos says you get to choose a background. Kind of like the Partner mechanic, but with an enchantment.

Yeah I really feel that Nalia is the better commander. Played it out the box with no changes and was problem every game with big deathtouchy threats. Burakos really relies on swinging and without some type of evasion, just dies later in the game.

No one is talking about the absolute powerhouse in twilight prophet, considering how battlfefield heavy this deck is ascend is easy, and the ability fits well with nalia, allowing you to perhaps leave a bomb on top even if you COULD play it, you also could wait and drain for a ton.

Honestly changing the commander actually makes lore sense as well, if I remember correctly Nalia is willing to JOIN any party, she doesn't lead, she follows everyone else's lead. Whereas Burakos is specifically referred to as "party leader" and as A dnd player that loves to focus on the lore aspect, this is great.
