Paris
Magic Man Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jetlag, been in a state of disaster
Ever since I left you the last time
I saw you just fade away

Now I get lost, tracing my steps back
It cost nearly everything that
I'm not ready to lose today
No I'm not ready to lose everything I know, I'm letting go of
Paris, you know I held on too much
I left you at the station, I put you in my past
And now darling, all that shit's behind us
You never have to wonder, you never have to ask

You never have to

Drink up every last drop and
Shake off the feeling that you're watching me now
I should have just told the truth

But now sweetheart, listen to the way I
Cannot forget a single day I
Spent rolling all around the room with you

It's just a fantasy, taking over like a disease
Pull me out of this I can't breath
It's burning through my chest

A fantasy, taking over like a disease
Pull me out of this I can't breath
I just need a rest from

Paris, you know I held on too much
I left you at the station, I put you in my past
And now darling, all that shit's behind us
You never have to wonder, you never have to ask

You never have to

It's just a fantasy, taking over like a disease
Pull me out of this I can't breath
It's burning through my chest

A fantasy, taking over like a disease
Pull me out of this I can't breath
Oh I just need a rest

No I'm not ready to lose you again

Oh Paris, you know I held on too much
I left you at the station, I put you in my past
And now darling, all that shit's behind us
You never have to wonder, you never have to ask

You never have to

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Magic Man's song "Paris" describe the aftermath of a breakup where the singer is struggling to move on and find a new sense of normalcy. The song begins with the singer expressing how he has been in a state of disaster since leaving his lover for the last time, with memories of their relationship still haunting him. He feels lost and is trying to trace his steps back to where he was before the relationship, but it has cost him nearly everything and he cannot bear to lose anything more.

The chorus talks about how the singer held onto the memories of Paris (a symbolic representation of their relationship), but he knows he needs to let it go. He left his lover at the station, put the relationship in the past, and all that is behind them now. The singer wants his lover to know that she never has to wonder or ask him if he still loves her because all those feelings are still there.

The song then repeats the same bridge, which emphasizes how the memories of their relationship are taking hold and he's losing control. He asks to be pulled out of this fantasy that is consuming him like a disease, but he just needs a rest.

Overall, the lyrics of "Paris" are about the struggles of letting go of a past relationship and yearning for a sense of normalcy. It is a song about trying to move on and finding a new sense of self after the end of a relationship.

I think is such an incredibly beautiful and sad song.

I interpret it as a guy who's reminiscing about a girl he fucked over, maybe a first serious relationship, and he feels sorry about it, but he doesn't miss her.

When he first ended things with her, he was very upset and didn't see how he was going to get through it, but as time went on, he felt okay and eventually moved on from her and put her memory in the closet, or "I put you in the past". Maybe it was the type of relationship that was dragged on and should have ended way earlier, but they just continued and overlooked a lot of things about each other, hence the "you know I held on too much". This girl was a different part of his life, and he's never gonna go back, but the only thing he regrets is the way he ended it with her, because he knows he hurt her deeply.

But my favorite lyrics are:
"Oh and now darling, all that shit is behind us
You never have to wonder
You never have to ask".
I think this is him saying to her: "Don't ever wonder if we made a mistake by ending it with each other, because it was dead. It would have never worked out between us. It's behind both of us." Maybe sometimes he wishes that things could have worked out differently, the fantasy that always overcomes him from time to time, but it's always just that: a fantasy. And he's even learning to forget about that, or "I just need a rest", final closure between him and this girl.

Him leaving her at the station was probably the awful breakup he gave to her, watching her "fade away". He probably said some hurtful things that he didn't mean. He just didn't know how to leave her. But he can never forget her, because that was his first serious relationship, so he's telling her "listen to the way I
cannot forget a single day I
Spent roaming all around the room with you". Her memory and their relationship will always forever be ingrained inside his mind, because he did love her at one point, but that's it. It's over now.

Beautiful and heartbreaking song.
