1) Magma is the brain-child of drummer/composer Christian Vander formed in Paris, France in 1969, disbanded in 1983 and reformed in 1996. Starting with a base of experimental rock heavily influenced by jazz and 20th century classical music, the band developed such a unique style of progressive rock that it became a new genre called Zeuhl. Characterized by insistent and repetitive rhythms, dramatic vocals, virtuosic solos, heavy bass playing, and jazzy drums, Zeuhl has been emulated by numerous followers from all over the world. Almost all of Magma's lyrics are sung in the constructed language known as "Kobaïan" and concerns a lengthy saga about Earth and the planet Kobaïa, with spiritual and environmental themes.
2) Magma is a progressive folk group from Argentina. The music retains strong Andean influences and is notable for incorporating the flutes of the region. Their output is notable for meshing the Andean elements with Spanish folk guitar and the adoption of European song structures and instrumentation. Extended prog and folk songs see the use of both Mellotron and pan flutes. Despite being an 1980s outfit, their music is reminiscent of 70s progressive rock and 60s/70s folk. Truly a great example of music transculturation on various levels.
3) Magma is a German progressive/spacey band that recorded an album called Rock Duo Magma in 1975.
4) Magma (마그마) is a psychedelic band from Korea.
5) Magma is a pop-rock group from Poland.
6) Magma is a hardcore band from Orlando, Florida
7) Magma is a modern thrash metal band from Belgrade, Serbia. They are a famous underground Serbian demo band. They have recorded their first album and are now looking for label.
8) Magma is a tribal house duo from Antwerpen, Belgium. It consists of Kelvin Smits and Sebastien Kalonji and have also released under the names Clean and Spanner.
9) Magma is a Hard Rock band from Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands)

Magma is a French progressive rock band that was formed in 1969. They are known for their unique and experimental music style, which combines elements of rock, jazz, and classical music with invented language and cosmic themes. The song "Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh" is one of their most iconic and complex compositions. It tells the story of a futuristic civilization that is facing a catastrophic event, and their attempt to prevent it by using a powerful machine called the "Mekanïk." The lyrics are written in the band's own invented language, called "Kobaïan," which adds to the mystique and otherworldly atmosphere of the song.
The song is divided into three long movements, with each part reflecting a different phase of the story. The first part introduces the characters and the problem they are facing, while the second part describes their attempt to use the machine to save themselves. The third and final part is a chaotic and cathartic eruption of sound, representing the destruction of the civilization and the triumph of the machine.
Overall, "Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh" is a challenging and rewarding listening experience, showcasing the band's virtuosic musicianship and imaginative songwriting.

Hi Bob! I'd recommend these albums/pieces:
- Emehntett-Re (album): I think this is a great starting point; it's from 2009 which is technically peak Magma IMO, and it has my favourite version of Hhai, one of the greatest Magma songs (the rest of the album is great also).
- Theusz Hamtaahk (piece): saw it performed live so I have special fondness for it. Gives me the chills. Best version is on the "Epok 1" (Mythes et Legendes) DVD
- Zess (piece): The 30-min "song" which got me into Magma in the first place. I actually listened to this only for about a year before exploring the rest of the band. (Epok version is the best IMO, but hard to find on youtube since they're releasing Zess as an album soon)
- Kohntarkosz (album): Probably my favourite album. Opens with a bang, then it gets very droney and psychedelic, and it closes with the mother of all bangs. Listening to it gave me a big "holy shit" moment.
- Attahk (album): not my favourite, but it's closer to "prog rock" than any other Magma album.
- Mekanink Destruktiw Kommandoh: a great album, maybe their most "important" one, but not one I'd recommend for getting into the band. But who knows, maybe you'll like it instantly (it had to grow on me).

This intro is the classic MDK intro from back in the 70s. It goes like this:
"The following tells the story of a people from Central Europe
Who rebelled against their tyrant.
They walked on the palace.
And the songs of these people were so beautiful
That they faded in space.
The following tells the story of:
MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW KOMMANDOH"

You just can't get tired of this. I've probably listened to this 300 times and it still gives me goosebumps like the first time. Christian Vander is undoubtedly the best drummer EVER. And the music is simply astounding. My only wish is to be able to see them live someday.

This is proof that Magma is best experienced live. I am not a religious person, but seeing them three years ago in Philadelphia was as close to a religious experience I could ever have.
Magus Perdé
I've always seen magma as spiritual experiences for everyone. a good way to have one as an atheist.
