1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

Broken Promises
Magnum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You told me right from the start
I wondered what’s happening
And watched it coming apart
The feeling’s gone, I think you’ll find
I’m not the one you had in your mind
You filled your cup, don’t want no more
Broken promises
I recall the things that you said
Broken promises
Must have let it go to your head
I might stumble but you know that I’d never fall
Maybe that’s hard to believe
I’d be willing to love you but I’d never crawl
I’d be the first one to leave
I’m leaving, I’ve said before
You’re trouble, straight from my past
There’s nothing you’ve got to give
I’m not the first, I won’t be the last
A joker’s heart can’t understand
The emptiness, the colder the hand
You pack it up and say goodbye
Without a tear clouding your eye
Broken promises
I recall the things that you said
Broken promises
Must have let it go to your head
I might stumble but you know that I’d never fall
Maybe that’s hard to believe
I’d be willing to love you but I’d never crawl
I’d be the first one to leave
Wait for a moment
Just a moment
For a moment
Wait for a moment
Broken promises
I recall the things that you said
Broken promises
Must have let it go to your head
I might stumble but you know that I’d never fall
Maybe that’s hard to believe
I’d be willing to love you but I’d never crawl
I’d be the first one to leave
Magnum's song "Broken Promises" is about the end of a tumultuous relationship that was based on lies and broken promises. The singer questions the things that were said to him, wondering if they were ever true. He watched as the relationship crumbled before his eyes, as the promises made were repeatedly broken, and he realized that he was not the person his partner had in mind. He acknowledges that the feeling is gone and the game is up, and decides to close the door on the relationship once and for all.
The lyrics speak to the singer's strength and resilience, as he asserts that though he may stumble, he will never fall. He is willing to love his partner, but he refuses to crawl or be degraded. The chorus repeats the phrase "broken promises," emphasizing the disappointment and pain that comes from being let down by someone you thought you could trust.
The song's bridge, "Wait for a moment," creates a sense of pause and reflection, as if the singer is taking a moment to gather his thoughts and emotions. It's a brief break in the fast-paced heartbreak of the song, a moment to catch his breath before continuing on.
This song resonates with anyone who has been let down by someone they trusted, and embodies the feeling of strength and independence that comes from leaving a toxic relationship behind.
