1) Magnum is an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, RIP) and Bob Catley (vocals) in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain.
Magnum's most significant early success was Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. It included several songs that would become mainstays of the band's live set, notably "Soldier of the Line", "Sacred Hour" and "The Spirit". On a Storyteller's Night gave the band its breakthrough in Europe, and achieved a Gold certification in the United Kingdom. The band's 1986 album Vigilante represented a further move towards the mainstream before the band achieved their commercial peak in 1988 when they entered the UK Top Ten for the first time with the album Wings of Heaven, which reached number five and featured three Top 40 singles, "Days of No Trust", "Start Talking Love" and "It Must Have Been Love". It was followed by Goodnight L.A., which was produced by Keith Olsen and reached number nine in the UK Album Chart in 1990. It produced another Top 40 single for the band, "Rockin' Chair".
In 1995, Clarkin announced Magnum's split; however, Clarkin and Catley continued working together, now under the name Hard Rain, until 1999. Magnum reformed in 2001 and has enjoyed late-career commercial success. Their most recent album, The Monster Roars, was released in January 2022.

Eyes Wide Open
Magnum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't you despair
Sleep tight, maybe
Morning will answer your prayers
Eyes wide open
Going nowhere
No words spoken
Their faces still haunt me
I tremble reluctantly
Like children they wonder
Their freedom dies endlessly
We're all crazy
That's just a fact
They can't save me
Heaven will come dressed in black
It's all over
Into the fire
Hatred smoulders
Gathered 'round each funeral pyre
Their faces still haunt me
I tremble reluctantly
Like children they wonder
Their freedom dies endlessly
The place is still burning
They crumble in sympathy
This nonsense surrounds us
No reason, no empathy
People feel forsaken
In this place together
Everything is breaking
It will take forever
Their faces still haunt me
I tremble reluctantly
Like children they wonder
Their freedom dies endlessly
The place is still burning
They crumble in sympathy
This nonsense surrounds us
No reason, no empathy
The lyrics to Magnum's song "Eyes Wide Open" describe a feeling of desolation and despair in the face of tragedy. The song begins with a consoling message to a loved one, encouraging them to rest easy and have faith that their prayers will be answered. However, as the song progresses, there is a sense of hopelessness and a feeling that there is no escape from the darkness that surrounds the singer. They are 'going nowhere' with 'no words spoken', suggesting a feeling of being lost and directionless. The haunting faces of those affected by the tragedy still 'tremble' in the singer's mind, and they admit that they themselves are 'all crazy'. The song ends with a sense of finality as the singer acknowledges that 'it's all over', and the world around them crumbles in sympathy.
The imagery used in the lyrics is powerful and evocative, painting a picture of a world in chaos. The endlessness of the freedom that dies, the sympathy of those who crumble - these are all reminiscent of the experience of grief and despair. The repetition of the haunting faces that 'still haunt' the singer adds to the sense of trauma that lingers long after the tragedy has ended. The use of the word 'nonsense' to describe the situation suggests an overriding feeling of futility and a sense that there is no reason or logic to be found in the tragedy.
