His Eye Is On The Sparrow
Mahalia Jackson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why should I feel discouraged?
And why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart feel lonely
And long for heavenly home
When Jesus is my portion?
And my constant friend is He
You know, his eye is on the little sparrow
And I know he cares for you and me
His eye is on the little sparrow
And I know God is watching over you and me

I sing because my soul is a happy
I sing because I'm free

For His eye, it is on the little sparrow
And I know He's watching over you and me

Overall Meaning

Mahalia Jackson's song "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" is a powerful and soulful gospel hymn that speaks to the enduring faith that Christians hold in God's grace, even in the midst of adversity and uncertainty. The lyrics open with the singer questioning why she should feel discouraged, asking why shadows and loneliness should cloud her heart and make her long for her heavenly home. But the answer lies in the knowledge that "Jesus is my portion", that he is her constant friend and advocate, and that God's care extends even to the smallest and seemingly most insignificant creatures - "his eye is on the little sparrow". This is a reminder that no matter how difficult life may seem at times, the power of God's grace and compassion can always provide comfort and hope.

The second verse of the song brings a note of jubilation to the proceedings, as the singer declares that she sings because her soul is happy and because she is free. It is clear that this sense of joy and liberation comes from the knowledge that God is watching over her and all those who place their trust in him. The repetition of the phrase "His eye is on the little sparrow" serves as a refrain which drives home the central message of the song - that God's love and care are boundless, and that we should take comfort in the knowledge that he is always watching over us.

My grandma just passed today. 5:15 PM. This is her favorite song. She always sings it to me and my cousins. She sings because she is happy. She sings because she is free. And God always watched over her.

This is when Gospel music was pure. This day its about fame and money. This great woman live 3 blocks down from where I lived in Chicago. She had a modest and beautiful red and white colored home with a rose garden in front of it. I remember her from my childhood of how she made me feel. She is greatly missed. Greatly missed.

I met Ms. Jackson a number of times as a 12-14 year old on a television variety program in Los Angeles during the 1960ties. Unlike all other celebrities there she took the time to sit and talk to me as an adult. She very clearly expressed to me a future where young people could build a new world in which race was irrelevant. She was the most spiritual and finest person I have ever known, with no bitterness or anger. I have done well but only wish I could have lived my life more like her.
