1. Mainland is made up of four New York City transplants – by way of California and Upstate New York – who met each other at rooftop parties in the summer of 2010. They quickly formed a following around Manhattan and Brooklyn, ultimately getting profiled in the L Magazine’s noted “8 Bands You Need to Hear" issue, an annual cull of must-hear groups. Rolling Stone, French Elle, Consequence of Sound, and Interview Magazine have all since touted the group.
Mainland recently finished recording their new EP "Girls Unknown" with Luke David, who produced Topf’s previous group, the Vox Jaguars. The band labored on it throughout summer from the 100-year-old Shepard Hall in Harlem and their studio (dubbed the “Brickhouse"), a cavernous underground grotto at the foot of the Manhattan Bridge. The debut record is filled with Mainland’s tight song structures, poppy guitar riffs, and New York attitude that takes listeners to the warm space between melancholy and pleasure. The band will be embarking on their first American tour this summer in support of their new EP.
2. Mainland is a blues/rock/jazz/funk band from Basel, Switzerland.

Outcast
Mainland Lyrics

Driving all around this great big city with you
Working 9 to 5 staying up all night
From dusk till dawn motorcycle ride impromptu
Wake up every day just to waste my paycheck
Living the escape in the discoteque
I wrecked your ride on the boulevard
Outcast from our lovers
Outcast to each other
Outcast from myself I know
Outcast from our mothers
Outcast to each other
Outcast from the one I love
Out of gas, out of money, out of time well spent
And pretty girls don't pay the rent oh heaven
I've learned my lesson not to fall too hard
For someone that is bound just to break apart, oh well
Wake up every day just to waste my paycheck
Living the escape in the discoteque
I wrecked your ride on the boulevard
90mph didn't get us very far now
Outcast from our lovers
Outcast to each other
Outcast from myself I know
Outcast from our mothers
Outcast to each other
Outcast from the one I love
Wake up every day just to waste my paycheck
Living the escape in the discoteque
I wrecked your ride on the boulevard
90mph didn't get us very far now
Outcast from our lovers
Outcast to each other
Outcast from myself I know
Outcast from our mothers
Outcast to each other
Outcast from the one I love
The lyrics of "Outcast" by Mainland share the story of a person who is feeling disengaged and disconnected from the world around them. The opening lines "Every second every moment every day is new, driving all around this great big city with you" convey a sense of aimlessness but also a feeling of possibility. However, the lyrics also suggest that despite living life on the edge, there is a lack of direction and meaningful connections.
The chorus of "Outcast from our lovers, outcast to each other, outcast from myself I know" highlights the feeling of loneliness and isolation, despite being surrounded by people. The repetition of the word outcast emphasizes the idea of being rejected and feeling like an outsider. Lines such as "out of gas, out of money, out of time well spent" and "pretty girls don't pay the rent" reinforce the feeling of being lost and struggling.
In essence, "Outcast" is a relatable portrayal of feeling disenchanted with life, and an ode to the struggles people face as they attempt to find meaning and connections in a rapidly changing world.
