Auld Lang Syne
Mairi Campbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?
And days of auld lang syne, my dear,
And days of auld lang syne.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days of auld lang syne?

We twa hae run aboot the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine.
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld lang syne.
Sin' auld lang syne, my dear,
Sin' auld lang syne,
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld ang syne.

We twa hae sported i' the burn,
From morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

Sin' auld lang syne, my dear,
Sin' auld lang syne.
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

And ther's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,

We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Overall Meaning

The song "Auld Lang Syne" is a beloved folk tune and an anthem of nostalgia, friendship, and togetherness. The lyrics are a reflection on the passing of time and the importance of remembering old friends and shared experiences. The first stanza poses a poignant question about forgetting old acquaintances and the days gone by. The repeated chorus emphasizes the significance of the past and the memories that connect us, despite time and distance.

The second and third stanzas describe the singer's personal experiences with a dear friend, recalling shared adventures, walks in the hills, and playful moments by the stream. The lyrics evoke a sense of longing and regret, as the two friends have been separated by "seas between us braid," suggesting either physical distance or emotional barriers.

The final stanza offers a resolution and a call to action. The singer invites the friend to join hands and raise a toast to "the days of auld lang syne," which translates to "the long, long ago." This gesture signifies forgiveness, reconciliation, and gratitude for the good times that they've shared. In this way, the song celebrates the power of human connection and the ability to overcome differences, time, and space through shared experiences.

I find it amazing that with the inclusion of this gorgeous rendition in an otherwise light movie, Auld Lang Syne went from being a meaningless holiday anthem to being a poignant, tear-inducing favorite song about love, friendship, loss and everlasting memory. Most of us had never heard as powerful a version of this song before SATC. If SJP and Co gave us nothing else, they gave us this. Thank you.

@Arkybark

This is the classic Scottish version of Auld Lang Syne as Robert Burns collected and embellished it. Mairi Campbell does a wonderful job with it but there are quite a number of others by Scottish singers who sing it like this. You won't hear them on commercial TV. I have a playlist on my channel.
