Hoist the Colours
Malinda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The king and his men stole the queen from her bed
And bound her in her bones
The seas be ours and by the powers
Where we will we′ll roam

Yo ho, all hands
Hoist the colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die

Yo ho, haul together
Hoist the colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die

Some men have died and some are alive
And others sail on the sea
With the keys to the cage and the devil to pay
We lay to Fiddler's Green

Yo ho, haul together
Hoist the colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die

(Instrumental)

The bell has been raised from it′s watery grave
Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?
We call to all pay heed the squall
And turn yourself toward home

Yo ho, haul together
Hoist the colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die

Yo ho, haul together
Hoist the colours high

Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die

Overall Meaning

The song ‘Hoist the Colours’ by Malinda is a powerful ballad that expresses a strong sense of unity and defiance in the face of overwhelming odds. The song starts off by narrating how the king and his men took the queen from her bed and imprisoned her. But in the very next line, the lyrics suggest that the world is still theirs for the taking and they are free to roam wherever they please, even in the face of adversity.

The refrain of the song, ‘Yo ho, all hands, hoist the colours high, heave ho, thieves and beggars, never shall we die’ is a rallying cry for the crew to come together and stand as one, no matter how hard the situation may be. The lyrics evoke a sense of strength, valor, and passion for life that is deeply inspiring.

In the second half of the song, the lyrics acknowledge the sacrifices that have been made in the name of freedom, with some men dying and others sailing on the sea. The keys to the cage and the devil to pay suggest that they have already paid the price for their freedom, while Fiddler's Green refers to a sailor’s paradise where they can rest in peace after a life well-lived. The song ends with a call to recognize the signs of danger and to rush back to safety, but also to remain resolute and never give in to the fear of death.

I love these Sea Shanties.
I'm from Sydney Australia and we were the Penal Colony that the Irish Rebels and Bad Boys were sent to.
Don't know if you've ever been to Sydney, but these Irish Rock Choppers built amazing structures in Golden Hawkesbury Sandstone.
St Mary's Cathedral celebrated it's 200th anniversary in 2022.
It's magnificent and world famous.

They stood firm against every adversity.
Including sailing into The Great Unknown of Sydney Australia.

Notice how the female voice gives you a feeling of injustice/sadness/misfortune

While the male voice gives an uprising/revenge/enough is enough kinda feeling

It’s amazing to me.

I am talking about only this song and by no means consider women as inferior to men. It’s just their voice textures naturally represent certain emotions.

Awesome performance!

I never understood how singing was supposed to lure men to their deaths at sea, but here I am entranced by Malinda's voice like a moth to flame. I could listen to her sing until I forget time

Now imagine after a couple of weeks of nothing but shipboard monotony (as voyages should be, exciting voyages usually aren't good ones and end poorly) you hear a beautiful feminine voice faintly singing not too far in the distance, but its dark so you can't see where its coming from. No lights, no ship silhouetted against the stars/moon, just a wonderful singing. Now tell me would you want to check it out, I would.
Sirens a manifestation from the mind of early sailors told in the ports and retold again and again after returning from a "long" trip (long being out of sight of land at this point in time) and who wants to hear about "well we left 8 days ago, stood watch, on day 4 it got a little breezy so we shortened sail, Bob stubbed his toe, and Jim fell over on day 6 after we saw some odd patches of sea weed"....

@lovelybunchofcoconuts88

U are speaking of the Greek sirens they used their power of singing to luer men at sea in promise of sex only to use their souls as a meal and left the husk of flesh the man once was in the ocean and moved on to the next poor soul foolish enough to come within ear shot of their song. Only in the odesy stories do u hear of instances where someone was able to deny them this ability by filling Their ears with wax talk about being shot down.

Wow, I wish I had said that--you capture my feelings, exactly.

Ikr!! Her voice hits every note and it is so calming. And the bass gives me goose bumps every time I hear him sing. All of them are amazing!! It amazes me as a singer!! I want to sound like that one day!!!

I love how the verse "Some men have died and some are alive, and others sail on the seas." implies that the sailors are neither alive, nor dead while they sail, their fate only being know when the ship returns, or fails to.
