Many Are Called But Few Get Up
Man Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at this green fly crawling 'cross my page
Look at all the ants in splintered frosted glaze
Many are called but few get up.
Will you?
Such a lot of work that we all can do,
You can do it all, live, love, move and do.
Many are called but few get up,
Will you?

My eyes are burning,
My mind is opening.

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of Man's song "Many Are Called but Few Get Up" paint a vivid picture of the world around the artist, drawing attention to the small details often overlooked. The image of a green fly crawling across a page, juxtaposed with the splintered frosted glaze and busy ant colony, sets the stage for a deeper message about effort and action. The chorus, "Many are called but few get up. Will you?" urges the listener to take action and not simply be a bystander in life.

The verses focus on the concept that there is a lot of work to be done in the world, but it is something that can be accomplished. The repetition of the phrase "You can do it all, live, love, move and do" emphasizes the idea that there is no limit to what can be achieved if one puts in the effort. The second chorus again emphasizes the challenge, "Many are called but few get up. Will you?" This call to action is bolstered by the final line, "My eyes are burning, my mind is opening," suggesting that the singer is impassioned and able to envision the changes that can be made in the world.

There will never, ever again be anything like the Man Band.
The classic four piece line up of Mickey (RIP), Roger (RIP), Martin and Terry had a musical performance relationship that can only be described as nothing less than telepathic.
I can say this because I saw this particular line up (getting on for) 100 times in Britain and the continent over a period of about 2 years in the very early seventies and each performance of whichever tune they played while heavier than hell would always be different from the last time and would always end up perfectly, as it should, and yet they played like it was nothing! Breathtaking!
Greatest band line-up I have ever seen or ever will. Long live Man.

What a band - this is probably the greatest man track in my opinion and this is a super-heavy rendition. This should be made compulsory viewing for any kid picking up a guitar or anyone into rock music in the first place. Unfortunately latter generations dont even know about this great band and i feel sorry for them for that.

Agree 100% in all ways ... probably their greatest track from their greatest album "Do You Like it Here and Now, Are You Settling in?". Closely followed by "Would the Christians Wait Five Minutes? The Lions Are Having a Draw" from the "Man" album.

@David Sigafoos Must never forget the Greasy Truckers Party version of Spunk Rock which is beyond anything anyone has ever done. But you're dead right. been a fan for 52 years, seen em countless times and this particular track is THE definition of Heavy!
Under the right circumstances, especially right next to the cabs at a live gig, this track is literally mind blowing! Scariest, heaviest thing I've ever heard.

RIP Mickey Jones. Will never forget the magic. Have listened to Man since the 70's and they are still one of my favorite bands ever heard. Turned Dead Heads on to them in the 80's and they loved it along with Harvey Mandel's snake sound. Good stuff and thank you very much for keeping it going.

One of the greatest Welsh bands of all time

Bodhi Apurva

Yes and not forgetting to mention another brilliant Welsh group from the 1980s called Bella Vega. This band had 2 bass players, a lady lead singer and a drummer but their sound was just amazing.

Ian

Gotta include Budgie if we're talking about Wales
