Only Competition Is Me
Man Man Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

VERSE:
Break it to me gently
or give it to me straight
It may be hard to handle, but
I'm not prepared to wait

Am I on the island
or floating out to sea
Is it all of us together
Or is it only me

CHORUS:
Is it only me or is there something
better we could do
That we could live up to
I'm talking me and you

Is it only me or can we be the
way we want to be
Did I hear you agree...
Or is it only me?

VERSE:
Meet me in the middle
I feel a little fear
My body's getting nervous but
I still would have you near

Your eyes are so familiar
I know what you can see
Can you find a single difference
Or is it only me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Only Competition Is Me" by Man Man delve into themes of self-awareness, uncertainty, and the desire for connection.

In the first verse, the singer asks to be told the truth, whether gently or directly. They express their impatience and unwillingness to wait for something that might be difficult to handle. This could imply a sense of urgency and a willingness to face whatever challenges come their way. The following line, "Am I on the island or floating out to sea," suggests a feeling of isolation or detachment from others. The singer questions whether they are alone in their experiences or if everyone else feels the same way. This line creates a sense of ambiguity and introspection.

The chorus expands on this introspection and highlights the desire for something more meaningful. The singer wonders if there is a better course of action or a higher standard they could strive for. They specifically mention the potential for improvement in their own relationship by saying, "That we could live up to, I'm talking me and you." This demonstrates a longing for a deeper connection and the belief that both individuals have the power to make it happen. However, the singer also questions if their desire for improvement is shared by the other person, asking, "Did I hear you agree... Or is it only me?"

In the second verse, the singer continues to seek closeness and understanding. They request to meet in the middle, implying a willingness to compromise and find common ground. The line "My body's getting nervous but I still would have you near" suggests a vulnerability and anxiety that is tempered by the strong desire to be close to the other person. The singer's familiarity with the other person's eyes indicates a deep connection. However, they wonder if there are any differences between them, or if their perception of the relationship is solely their own. This line showcases a fear of misunderstanding or a potential mismatch in expectations.

Overall, "Only Competition Is Me" explores the complexities of self-perception, the longing for connection, and the uncertainty of shared desires and intentions within a relationship. The lyrics evoke a sense of introspection, vulnerability, and the desire for both personal growth and mutual understanding.

They say that "the eyes are the windows to the soul".
I think that Henry was using the blinking of his eyes to stop Daniel from reading his eyes, or figuring out what he's saying.
Later on, Daniel does figure it out and then Henry pays a very dear price for it.
I liked this movie.
I didn't see it until recently.
Kevin J. O'Connor is a very good supporting character actor.
I just wish that he would do more prominent roles like be the lead actor, but he did say in interviews that he doesn't want the lead role.
He wants these smaller roles to play.
I think that Kevin is really shy, so maybe that's why he don't want the lead role.....more people watching him.
I'm just saying that he could/would be VERY GOOD if he had the lead role.
He hasn't made any movies since last year and I'm hoping that he will be in some kind of movie.
He did say in an interview that because he's not a star yet, that he still has to audition for roles in movies, and also the reason why he hasn't made any other movies is because of COVID.
I hope to see him in another movie soon.
(Sorry for leaving a response to a 4 year old comment).

NOPE!!!
Kevin J. O'Connor is a VERY GOOD character actor, who I think, should have more roles (lead roles), not just supporting roles, in movies!
But Kevin did say that he doesn't want the lead role.
He wants to play that one character that nobody would ever give a second glance to, and turn it into a character that you won't soon forget!!
That's why Kevin is so good!!!
I just recently discovered Kevin's movies.
He was really good in "Lord of Illusions" and "Deep Rising".
Also, his performance as "Beni" in The Mummy was really good.
He nearly stole every scene in that movie.
Kevin was so funny as Beni.
Sorry for the reply 8 years later!!

"i don't want to talk about those things....." that sent chills. incredible acting

Still think about that line well over a decade later after first hearing it. "Brother, I been there..." to quote an offhand line from another film that'll always be inextricably linked to this one.

@@rivereuphrates8103 i cannot believe the timing of these films. best two films of the decade in the same town at the same time.

@@rivereuphrates8103I’m guessing No Country For Old Men?

For people who grew up with nothing know exactly what he was saying. When you have got nothing to offer people, you really see things for what it is.

@nukacolacompany2534

Having nothing to offer people doesnt really have anything to do with that, you can have plenty to offer and realize that too, it's really just based on your rough intelligence to determine your ability to see the world for what it is and to break free from the idealistic innocent worldview you may have gotten as a kid.

@@nukacolacompany2534oh but it does. Be at your lowest and see who will be there for you.

@gogurt9311

That's not what this scene is about at all... Daniel Plainview is a sociopath, there's more wrong with him than a rough childhood

@Wick.nilson

Sage insight but not what’s going on here at all.
