Secret Love
Mandy Moore(맨디 무어) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I had a secret love
That lived within the heart of me
All too soon my secret love
Became impatient to be free
So I told a friendly star
The way that dreamers often do
Just how wonderful you are
And why I'm so in love with you
Now I shout it from the highest hill
Even told the golden daffodils
At last my heart's an open door
And my secret love's no secret anymore
Now I shout it from the highest hill
Even told the golden daffodils

At last my heart's an open door
And my secret love's no secret anymore

Overall Meaning

"Mandy Moore's song Secret Love" is a beautiful and sentimental piece that captures the experience of having a secret love, the burden of carrying it within oneself, and the liberation felt once the love becomes public knowledge. The opening lines, "Once I had a secret love/That lived within the heart of me" establishes the theme of secrecy and the idea that the love exists only inside the singer's heart. The phrase "secret love" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing its central role as the driving force behind the singer's emotions.

In the second verse, the singer confesses that their love has become "impatient to be free" and that they can no longer contain it. They share their love with a "friendly star" and express how wonderful the object of their affection is, revealing that they are "so in love." This showcases the depth of the singer's feelings, and highlights how long they've been carrying their "secret love" within them.

The chorus repeats the idea that the singer is no longer keeping their love hidden, shouting it "from the highest hill," even sharing it with the "golden daffodils." It's clear that their heart is now open, and what was once a secret love is now freely expressed. The final line, "And my secret love's no secret anymore," closes the song with a triumphant and joyful feeling of release from the burden of keeping the love hidden.

Once, I had a secret love
That lived within the heart of me
All too soon, my secret love
Became impatient to be free
So I told a friendly star
In ways that dreamers often do
Just how wonderful you are
And why I'm so in love with you
Now I shout it from the highest hill
Even told the golden daffodils
At last, my heart's an open door
And my secret love's no secret anymore

Even told the golden daffodils
At last, my heart's an open door

She's such a great singer. She doesn't try to oversing and her voice compliments the melody of this song.

A great way to remake a classic Doris Day song. She gave it the beauty it deserves. Way to go Mandy. Those who hate her have no taste in music. She is an amazing singer and actress. A beautiful person. Love this song!

I am just so impressed with Mandy's growth as an artist. It's a universe between her "Candy" and this beautiful rendition of Secret Love from the film, Mona Lisa Smile released in 2003. Her vocals from 1:15 with that high c to her b @ 1:28 and then that gentle vibrato in her voice on the a and especially the a-flat at 1:28 -1:33 are simply stunning. "Enchanting" doesn't begin to describe the quality of her voice. This is a real winner of a song and I don't know how it didn't make it to the top ten. If they ever name a "Golden Age of Mandy Moore" it will be from 2003 to 2007 or so. That was her best work and this is one of her best songs, along with "Help Me, I Think I'm Falling In Love Again".

I have never heard a singer do what she does here--attack notes from above and then drop down into them. Incredible technique. And she still says "Well, I sort of sing." She has no idea how talented she is.
