Happy Ending
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We've had a share of glory
We've had our day in the sun
Oh this could be
Oh this could be

We've reached the stars and glitter
Fell from grace and asked for more
Oh this could be
Oh this could be

This could be a happy ending
This could be a happy ending

We've made more enemies than friends
Maybe too many to count
Oh this could be
Oh this could be

We've looked so old and beautiful
Fought the rain, the sleet and snow
Oh this could be
Oh this could be

This could be a happy ending
This could be a happy ending
This could be a happy ending
This could be a happy ending

This will be a new beginning
This will be a time for changing

This will be never ending
This will be a happy ending

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song talks about the rise and fall of fame and success. The line "We've had a share of glory, we've had our day in the sun" refers to the peak of their success, possibly the time when everything was going well, working in their favour, and they were enjoying the limelight. The phrase "reached the stars and glitter" implies that they reached their goals, achieved their dreams, and enjoyed the fruits of their labour. However, the phrase "fell from grace and asked for more" suggests that things didn't go as planned, and they found themselves wanting more, wanting to regain their status, and striving to reach the top once again.

The chorus of the song represents hope for a better future. The line "This could be a happy ending" repeats four times, emphasizing the possibility of a happy ending. Despite their past struggles, they seem optimistic that things will work out in the end. The second verse acknowledges the negative aspects of their past. The line "We've made more enemies than friends, maybe too many to count" hints at the hostile relationships they might have with people. This could be a reference to the cut-throat nature of the music industry, where competition and envy could breed jealousy and hatred. The line "We've looked so old and beautiful, fought the rain, the sleet and snow" could be a metaphorical way of saying that they've endured through tough times and come out of it stronger on the other side.

The final verse is about looking forward to the future. The phrase "This will be a new beginning, this will be a time for changing" represents a fresh start, a chance to turn things around and create a better future for themselves. The line "This will be never-ending, this will be a happy ending" implies that regardless of what happens, they're willing to put in the effort to make it work and never give up on their pursuit of happiness.

I thought this song was the end of the manics, about 15 years ago. Better than the A side

I think "We Are All Bourgeois Now" was the the natural and logical end to the Manics'. It seemed the perfect song to end it all on. Everything else after that just doesn't seem that urgent or energised. The classic Manic Street Preachers definitely seemed to end in 2001 before Lifeblood and these singles. Though, that's just the vibe I get, it's not anything really measurable or conclusive. Very happy to still seem them touring and releasing as they're hugely talented and are now pretty much the sole intelligent and creative bands out there, even if their current stuff I find really bland. But yeah, once the Manics are truly gone, there's nothing like them left in popular music. It's all dumb as shit now.
