Nació en Fresnillo, Zacatecas, aunque vivió su infancia en la ciudad de Aguascalientes. De vocación musical declarada desde su infancia, en 1901 ingresó al Conservatorio Nacional de Música, permaneciendo ahí hasta 1903. En 1904, fue a estudiar cursos superiores a la Escuela de Música de Bolonia, en Italia. Posteriormente viajó a Alemania, donde estudió entre 1906 y 1908, regresando finalmente a México, dedicándose a la docencia de piano e historia de la música.
Compositor controvertido, se dedicó a crear una obra musical basada en temas del folklore mexicano, combinándolos con el estilo romántico europeo de su época.
Entre sus obras, una de las que lo hizo famoso alrededor del mundo fue la canción Estrellita de la cual no recibió ningún centavo ya que, por negligencia, ni él ni su disquera registró la obra a su nombre. La fama llegó, pero no la fortuna. Hoy en día, "Estrellita" (no confundir con "Liitle, Twinkle Star") es erróneamente considerada una melodía de dominio público.
Compuso para varios instrumentos, y dominó especialmente la guitarra gracias a la amistad que sostuvo con el guitarrista español D. Andrés Segovia. Fue el primer compositor mexicano cuya música tuvo proyección internacional, y su nombre fue ampliamente conocido en el extranjero. Recibió el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes en 1947. Murió un año después y su cuerpo fue sepultado en la Rotonda de los Hombres Ilustres en el Panteón de Dolores de la Ciudad de México.

Que hermosa cancion, casi me salen las lagrimas, hermosa tambien la interpretacion del Tenor. Mexico tiene mucho talento, afortunadamente ese talento no esta en la Academia, ni en pequeños Gigantes, sino en Grandes Hombres que pasan a la posteridad con obras tan grandes como su misma vida.

I cannot believe, after so many years - I find out this is a song. I played this tune on the piano as a child, the john w.schaum purple book - Estrellita! One of my absolute favourite tunes. 20 yrs on from learning, and searching for the sheet music, I find this video. Wow. :)
