My Melancholy Baby
Marcels The Lyrics

My tears are fallin' cause you've taken her away
And through it really hurts me so
There's something that I gotta say
Take good care of my baby
Please don't ever make her blue
Just tell her that you love her
Make sure you're thinking of her
In everything you say and do
Take good care of my baby
Now don't you ever make her cry
Just let your love surround her
Don't let her see a cloudy sky
Once upon a time that little girl was mine
If I'd been true I know she'd never be with you, so
Take good care of my baby
Be just as kind as you can be
And if you should discover
That you don't really love her
Just send my baby back home to me
Take good care of my baby
Please don't ever make her blue
Just tell her that you love her
Make sure you're thinking of her
In everything you say and do
Take good care of my baby
Now don't you ever make her cry
Just let your love surround her
Don't let her see a cloudy sky
Once upon a time that little girl was mine
If I'd been true I know she'd never be with you, so
Take good care of my baby
Be just as kind as you can be
And if you should discover
That you don't really love her
Just send my baby back home to me

Oh take good care of my baby, take good care of my baby
Just take good care of my baby

Overall Meaning

"My Melancholy Baby" by Marcels is a song about heartbreak and regret. The singer is mourning the loss of his love to another person, and is begging that person to take care of her in his absence. He is aware that he was not always faithful or kind to her, and is hoping that the new person in her life will treat her well. He asks that they love her and always think of her, and never make her cry. The singer’s remorse is palpable, and he hopes that his plea for her care will be taken to heart.

The theme of lost love is a common one in music and “My Melancholy Baby” is one such song that captures the pain and regret of a heartbreak. While the tempo and upbeat rhythm of the song could give the impression it is a happy one, the lyrics reveal a much sadder story. It is a great example of contrasting lyrics and melody, which is a common characteristic of 60s pop music.

So My Melancholy Baby was basically the Freebird of its day!

Ha ha the start of the record is funny.

Gee that's pretty. Sing it again. LOL. That guy sounds like Paul Petersen. The Marcels cut a nice version of the Mann and Weil song Find Another Fool, but I don't think it charted.
