From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Marco Hietala (born January 14, 1966 in Finland) is the bassist and second vocalist of the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. He joined the band for their 2002 album Century Child, following the departure of previous bassist Sami Vänskä. Hietala is also vocalist, bassist and songwriter of the Finnish band Tarot, which he co-founded in 1986, and has also been part of the band Sinergy. Marco plays in Impaled Nazarene on album Suomi Finland Perkele (1994).
Since his arrival, several songs have been written to contain duets with the former Nightwish vocalist Tarja Turunen, allowing songwriter and band leader Tuomas Holopainen to take full advantage of Hietala's raucous voice to add a new dimension to the band.
During Nightwish's shows, Turunen would take a break halfway through the set. Before Hietala joined the band, they used to perform an instrumental song during this time. Since Hietala joined the band however, they have performed covers of well-known songs, with Hietala singing the lead vocal part in this break. The band has performed Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train", W.A.S.P.'s "Wild Child", Dio's "Don't Talk to Strangers", Megadeth's "Symphony of Destruction" and most recently, Pink Floyd's "High Hopes". Some of these songs have been put up for sale as well on various Nightwish album releases.

Järven aalto jäätynyt talvipakkasessa
Varpunen pienoinen, syönyt kesäeinehen
Järven aalto jäätynyt talvi pakkasessa
Pienen pirtin portailla oli tyttökulta:
Tule, varpu, riemulla, ota siemen multa!
Joulu on, koditon varpuseni onneton
Tytön luo nyt riemuiten lensi varpukulta:
Kiitollisna siemenen otan kyllä sulta
Palkita Jumala tahtoo kerran sinua
Kiitollisna siemenen otan kyllä sulta!
En mä ole, lapseni, lintu tästä maasta
Olen pieni veljesi, tulin taivahasta
Siemenen pienoisen, jonka annoit köyhälle
Pieni sai sun veljesi enkeleitten maasta
Siemenen pienoisen, jonka annoit köyhälle
Pieni sai sun veljesi enkeleitten maasta
The lyrics of Marco Hietala's Varpunen jouluaamuna speak of a snowy, winter landscape where the flowers in the valley have been covered in snow, and the lake has frozen over due to the winter cold. The song tells the story of a small sparrow who has had to scavenge for food after the summer has ended. The sparrow meets a kind-hearted girl who offers it seeds to eat, and the sparrow gratefully accepts. The song then takes a turn towards spirituality as the sparrow reveals to the girl that it is not just a bird, but a messenger from heaven who has come to fulfill a divine mission. The sparrow tells the girl that the seed she has given it will help a poor little person who will be visited by an angel.
In this song, the wintery landscape represents the harshness of life. The small sparrow symbolizes the poor and oppressed, and the girl represents those who have the power to help them. The act of kindness displayed by the girl towards the sparrow serves as a reminder that selfless acts of kindness can go a long way in making the world a better place. The spiritual undertones of the song speak to the power of faith, and belief in something greater than ourselves.

English lyrics to this classic Finnish melancholic Xmas song by Otto Kotilainen (1913) from Zacharias Topelius's poem (1859):
Song name in english: "Sparrow on Christmas Morning"
'Snow has already covered, the flowers in the valley
The comber of the lake, frozen in the winter freeze
A sparrow, little one, has eaten the summertime food
The comber of the lake, frozen in the winter freeze'
'On the stairs of a little cabin, there was a girl dear,
Come sparrow, with joy, take a seed from me
Christmas is homeless, my sparrow miserable
Come sparrow, with joy, take a seed from me'
'Joyously, to the girl, the dear sparrow flew (and said):
"With gratitudes, I take the seed from you"
"In time, the God, will want to reward you"'
- Guitar solo by Erkka Korhonen -
'On the stairs of a little cabin, there was a girl dear,
Come sparrow, with joy, take a seed from me
Christmas is homeless, my sparrow miserable
"Come sparrow, with joy, take a seed from me"'
'Joyously, to the girl, the dear sparrow flew (and said):
"With gratitudes, I take the seed from you"
"In time, the God, will want to reward you"'
- Child choir (sings as a sparrow) -
"I am not, my child, a bird from this land"
"I am your small brother, I came from heavens"
"The tiny seed, that you gave to the poor..."
"The small brother of yours, from the land of angels, received it..."
"The tiny seed, that you gave to the poor..."
"The small brother of yours, from the land of angels, received it..."
------------
PS. Whenever the child choir sings those lyrics, the meaning of the song hits hard, every time. Superlative performance by Marco again here + beautiful rock arrangement/rendition. Kudos to uploader too, very high video/audio quality from this tour! Keep up the good work!
