When
Margaret Whiting & Jimmy Wakely Lyrics

Last night when we were young
Love was a star, a song unsung
Life was so new, so real so right
Ages ago last night

Today the world is old
You flew away and time grew cold
Where is that star that shone so bright
Ages ago last night?
To think that spring had depended
On merely this: a look, a kiss
To think that something so splendid
Could slip away in one little daybreak

So now, let's reminisce
And recollect the sighs and the kisses
The arms that clung

When we were young last night

Margaret was a big band singer from the 40's--a great singer--a classy lady--who I had the pleasure of working with when I was a Promotion Manager at RCA in the early 70's. She passed away a couple of years ago but had a long, great life and left her mark on American popular music. RIP Margaret....

Reminds me of Mom -- one of many songs she'd sing while attending to household chores and the kids. This kind of music helped her make it through some rough times; and we kids were the beneficiaries. Thanks Mom, and thanks for all the wonderful music that filled our lives. 6/2018

My parents must have bought this record when I was two years old it was one of those old breakable 78 RPM records but we played it for years and years

I remember when this was number1. We didn't have any money to play jukebox or buy records, we listened on the radio. Thank you for letting us enjoy this great music.

I was a Jimmy Wakely fan, I think, because I'd seen him on the Arthur Godfrey TV show when I was a kid. Anyway, in the late 70s I saw Jimmy perform at a restaurant at Fishermen's Terminal in Seattle. He was an accessible and enduring talent. I'm glad I got to see him sing.

My favorite version of this song by this duet. I heard them sing it on my Grandpa's wind-Charger radio when I was 3 & for 17 weeks it was #1. No longer #1 2 weeks after I turned 4, but they kept playing it. It was a great dance tune that everybody loved to dance to & the couples would slip around on that stuff they threw on the dance floor. ET couldn't miss singing a great dance tune, so he recorded in 1949 too. Floyd Tillman, writer of the song, did 1st record. On a radio a lot in 1949 & 50.
