Their debut album, The Dust of Retreat came out in 2006. At this time, the band was signed to Artemis Records and had 8 members. In 2008 the band signed to Epic Records and (on 7 October) released two new albums, Animal! and Not Animal. The band originally planned to just release "Animal!". However, Epic disagreed on their song choice, and compiled a different list, which would later become "Not Animal". Eventually, after dispute over which version would be released, it was decided to release both at the same time.
In August 2009, 5 of the band's members left. They are all involved in other projects, most notably Pravada.
While the band, and Richard specifically have given many explanations to the band's name; this is all in fun. As the name was created as an anti-name; not meant to have any real meaning, just to make fun of other ridiculous names. The name "Margot" comes from Gweneth Paltrow's character in Wes Anderson's "The Royal Tenenbaums".
The band's sound, categorized as "chamber pop", has been compared to the indie rock groups Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, and The Shins, while incorporating elements of singer/songwriters like Paul Simon and Conor Oberst.

My Baby
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My baby shoots her mouth off
You're stripping naked in the hallway
Not a care in your head
No strip of clothing, no cop inside
I'd say I'd do it, alright kid, you're a tough chick
My baby shoots her mouth off
My baby shoots her mouth off, mouth off
Ahoo, ahoo, ahoo
Ahoo, ahoo, ahoo
Come over and convert me
Lead me straight to the cross
You're gettin' over in the chapel
People are staring at you, please, good grief
My baby wants to kill me
My baby wants to kill me, kill me
Ahoo, ahoo, ahoo
Hard times, bad breaks
My baby shoots her mouth off
My baby shoots her mouth off, mouth off
Ahoo, ahoo, ahoo
Ahoo, ahoo, ahoo
The lyrics of Margot & the Nuclear So and So's's song "My Baby" describe a tumultuous relationship with a woman who frequently "shoots her mouth off." The singer seems both enamored and exasperated by this woman, as they watch her confidently and carelessly strip down in a hallway and provoke various people in a chapel. Despite her unpredictable and sometimes violent behavior ("My baby wants to kill me"), the singer clearly finds her alluring and thrilling ("alright kid, you're a tough chick").
The song portrays a complex mix of emotions, from frustration and fear to admiration and desire. The repeated "Ahoo, ahoo, ahoo" throughout the song adds to its atmosphere of wild abandon and uncertainty. It seems to suggest that the singer is caught up in a whirlwind of passion with this woman, unable to resist her even as she causes chaos and mayhem. Overall, "My Baby" is a provocative and enigmatic song that explores the darker side of romantic love.
