Carey's self-titled debut album was released under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, who married her three years later. She gained further worldwide success with the albums Music Box (1993) and Daydream (1995). Their singles include "Hero", "Without You", "Fantasy", "Always Be My Baby", and "One Sweet Day", which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 decade-end chart (1990s) and was the longest running number one song of the decade. After separating from Mottola, Carey adopted a new urban image and incorporated more elements of hip hop with the album Butterfly (1997). She left Columbia in 2001 after eleven consecutive years of U.S. number-one singles and signed a $100 million record deal with Virgin Records.
Following Carey's highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown and the failure of the film Glitter (2001) and its soundtrack, Virgin bought out her contract and she signed with Island Records the following year. After a comparatively unsuccessful period, Carey returned to the top of the charts with The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), which became the best-selling album in the US and the world's second best-selling album of 2005. Its second single, "We Belong Together", topped the US Billboard Hot 100 decade-end chart (2000s). She won the Breakthrough Actress Performance award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for her role in the 2009 film Precious. Carey's subsequent ventures included being an American Idol judge, starring in the docu-series Mariah's World, appearing in the films The Butler (2013), A Christmas Melody (2015), and The Lego Batman Movie (2017), performing at two Las Vegas concert residencies, and publishing her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey in 2020.
Carey is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 220 million records sold worldwide. She holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist (19), a female songwriter (18), and a female producer (15). Carey is the highest-certified female artist in the United States and 10th overall, with 72 million certified album units. In 2008, she was named one of Time's annual 100 most influential artists and entertainers in the world. Billboard named her the "top-charting female solo artist", based on both album and song chart success in 2019. Carey has won 5 Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 10 American Music Awards, 15 Billboard Music Awards and eight Guinness World Records. An inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, she is credited for inspiring multiple generations of pop and R&B artists, and for merging hip hop with pop music through her crossover collaborations.

That you're happy with somebody new (happy, na, na, na, na)
Baby because I am the love I can call my own
And I know it ain't part to you
We can't stop now
We can't stop
You can't stop
We can't stop now
We can't stop
You can't stop
Don't try
We can't stop now
We can't stop
You can't stop
Don't try
We can't stop now
We can't stop
You can't stop
Don't try
Don't you know that you seem
Just a little crazy
And I trust in intimacy
But you threw it away just threw it away
And now that's all in the past
When I think of you I just laugh
My friends must of thought I was high
'Cause I given so much to someone not worth my time
Funny how sometimes
You can really lose your mind
And do things you would never do
Did I do that?
You rhapsodize, you get caught up in the high
Till your senses return to you
Love played you for a fool
You were so insecure
And your crew was so immature
Conversations strangely weak
Your were much better off when you didn't speak
But boy to tell you the truth
It was my illusion of you
Being so how destined for me
Got me in the days, but we're not the same
Funny how sometimes
You can really lose your mind
And do things you would never do
Did I do that?
You rhapsodize, you get caught up in the high
'Til your senses return to you
Love played you for a fool
I really hope when you hear this song
That you know it was meant for you (you, you, you, you)
Know you're the one to ride alone
Try to do the best you can do
We can't stop now
We can't stop
You can't stop
Don't try (no)
We can't stop now
We can't stop
You can't stop (we can't stop now)
Don't try
We can't stop now
We can't stop
You can't stop (we can't stop now)
Don't try
We can't stop
You can't stop
Don't try (it's funny how sometimes)
Funny how sometimes
You can really lose your mind
And do things you would never do
Do things you would never do
You rhapsodize, and get caught up in the high
'Til your senses return to you
Love played you for a fool
Funny how sometimes
You can really lose your mind
And do things you would never do
Do things, do some stupid things
You rhapsodize, and get caught up in the high
Till your senses return to you
Love played you for a fool
Funny how sometimes
You can really lose your mind
And do things you would never do (I was such a fool)
But I won't be a fool no more
You rhapsodize, and get caught up in the high
'Til your senses return to you
Love played you for a fool
Funny how sometimes
You can really lose your mind
And do things you would never do (I was such a fool)
I won't be a fool no more
You rhapsodize, and get caught up in the high
The lyrics to Mariah Carey's song "Did I Do That" delve into the aftermath of a failed relationship and the singer's realization that they were mistaken in their perception of their partner. The song begins with the hope that the listener has found happiness with someone new, emphasizing the singer's acceptance that they are now the love they can call their own. The repetition of "we can't stop now" and "don't try" suggests a refusal to go back to the past, acknowledging that they have moved on and it is futile to try to resurrect what is gone.
The chorus explores the singer's realization of their own actions during the relationship, questioning whether they actually did those things. The lines "Funny how sometimes you can really lose your mind and do things you would never do" highlight the disorientation and irrationality that can accompany a failed romance. The singer acknowledges feeling like a fool and recognizes that love played them for one.
In the second verse, the focus shifts to the flaws of the partner. The partner is described as insecure, with an immature group of friends and weak conversations. The line "But boy to tell you the truth, it was my illusion of you" suggests that the singer may have projected their desires onto the partner, creating a false image. Despite moments of confusion and mistakes, the singer resolves not to be a fool anymore.
Overall, "Did I Do That" captures the emotions of post-breakup introspection, highlighting the rollercoaster of feelings and the realization that one's perception may have been skewed. It serves as a reminder to trust one's instincts and not to dwell on past mistakes.
