I Only Wanted You
Marie Osmond Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never wanted that mansion on a hill.
I never needed that Cadillac Seville.
I only wanted you
I only wanted you.

I never wanted those diamonds on my hand
I was happy with just a wedding band.
I only wanted you
I only wanted you.

I just wanted to have your arms around me.
I just needed to feel your love surround me.
And now that we're apart, it breaks my heart in two.
'Cause you never really had a clue I only wanted you.

Instead of always giving me something else
I wish just once you'd given me yourself.
I only wanted you,
I only wanted you.

I just wanted to have your arms around me.
I just needed to feel your love surround me.
And now that we're apart, it breaks my heart in two.
That you never even had a clue, I only wanted you.

I only wanted you.
I only wanted you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Marie Osmond's song "I Only Wanted You" express a sentiment of simplicity and yearning for love that is often overlooked in our materialistic and consumption-driven society. The singer of the song is lamenting the fact that her partner never truly understood that all she ever wanted was his love and affection, rather than lavish gifts and possessions.

The first stanza sets the tone for this sentiment, with the singer expressing that she never desired a mansion on a hill or a Cadillac Seville, two symbols of wealth and success that are often coveted in our society. Instead, her heart's desire was much simpler - just to be loved by her partner. The second stanza reinforces this idea, where the singer proclaims that she was content with just a wedding band, rather than diamonds on her hand. These lyrics demonstrate that love and emotional intimacy are much more important to the singer than material possessions.

In the chorus of the song, the singer expresses that she just wanted to feel her partner's arms around her and to feel his love surround her. The repetition of the phrase "I only wanted you" emphasizes the singer's singular focus on her partner's love and affection. The pre-chorus mentions the pain of separation, which is all the more heartbreaking because her partner never truly understood what she really wanted.

Overall, the lyrics of "I Only Wanted You" communicate an important message about the true value of love and emotional connection in our lives, and invites reflection on the things that really matter in our relationships.

The lyrics remind me of the lyrics to -The Way That You Love Me by Paula Abdul.

It ain't the clothes that you wear
It ain't the things that you buy
It ain't your house on the hill
It ain't the plane that you fly
It ain't your black limousine
It ain't your ninety-foot yacht
It ain't the things that you'll get
It ain't the things that you got

My all-time favorite Marie Osmond single and music video! I was totally mesmerized by this song the first time I heard it. I loved watching Marie perform this song during her concerts. It's too bad it didn't go higher on the country music charts but at that time country was moving towards more traditional country music with country artists like the Judds and Randy Travis.

Love how Marie reinvented herself as a Contemporary Country singer in the 80's and sang original songs and not like her earlier country covers albums.
