Marina the Diamonds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't wanna talk anymore
I'm obsessed with silence
I go home and I lock my door
I can hear the sirens

I see buildings and bars from the window
And I listen to the wind blow
I see people and cars covered in gold
And I'm happy to be on my own

Hard like a rock, cold like stone
White like a diamond, black like coal
Cut like a jewel, yeah I repair
Myself when you're not there

Solitaire
Something you consider rare
I don't wanna be compared
With that cheap shimmer and glitter
Solitaire

I'm in love with the ice-blue, gray skies of England
I'll admit, all I wanna do is get drunk and silent
Watch my life unfold all around me
Like a beautiful garden
I see flowers so tall, they surround me
Oh my heart, it became so hardened

Hard like a rock, cold like stone
White like a diamond, black like coal
Cut like a jewel, yeah I repair
Myself when you're not there

Solitaire
Something you consider rare
I don't wanna be compared
With that cheap shimmer and glitter
Solitaire

And all the other jewels around me
They astounded me at first
I covered up my heart in boundaries
And all the fakes, they called me cursed
But I'm not cursed, I'm not cursed
I was just covered in dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt

Solitaire
Something you consider rare
I don't wanna be compared
With that cheap shimmer and glitter
Solitaire

Overall Meaning

The song Solitaire by Marina and the Diamonds is a contemplative piece about self-reflection and the need for solitude. The opening lines express a desire for silence, a turning away from the noise and chaos of the world outside. The singer seeks refuge in her own home, locking herself away. The sirens she hears outside suggest that the world is not a safe place, and perhaps her withdrawal is a reaction to this. The second verse introduces a new motif - that of jewels and precious stones. The singer sees the world around her as covered in gold and glitter, yet she takes solace in the simplicity of her own solitude. The chorus echoes this sentiment, praising the value of being alone, of being 'rare' and unlike any other.

The second half of the song expands on this theme, with the singer reflecting on her own emotional journey. She speaks of her heart becoming hardened, yet still sees the beauty in the world around her. The line "I was just covered in dirt, dirt, dirt" suggests that she has been through some difficult times, but is not broken by them. The final repetition of the chorus gives a sense of resolution, with the singer embracing her unique self and rejecting comparisons to others.

@randomuploadsism

I absolutely these lines and it's possibly my favourite part of this album.

For me these lines are about growing up & developing alone.
Because of the isolation she has experienced, she has become hardened and tough. Difficult to read (both black and white), stoic and unfeeling. There has been no-one to comfort her in her lowest moments - she has had to learn to repair herself.

She acknowledges her beauty (diamond, jewel) - but has paid a price to be so successful and beautiful (cut).

"Hard like a rock, cold like a stone
White like a diamond, black like coal
Cut like a jewel, yeah I repair
Myself when youā€™re not there"
