Back in 64 at Parris Island we drilled with M14's. Things have come a long way with modified M16's with enhanced fore grips and ACOG's. Watching these Marines is like a symphony. I do and always will love the Corps. Spent 26 years of my life with them and watching this makes me want to go back. Age takes a tole on the body but not the soul.

Don't get me wrong, damn fine work that he physically made it to become a marine but he's not over there to protect your home.. He is, with lack of a better comparison, that bouncer the mobsters hired to 'protect' your shop from other gangs; he'll hang around, help out if needed but if mob gives the word that your shop should pay more taxes or that your store should be removed entirely, he'll be the first one to throw you out of your own shop.

I was in Boot Camp, San Diego, in ‘68. My dad was there in ‘38 and served in the South Pacific but passed before I joined. I went to Nam 68-69. I know Boot Camp was different now than it was in ‘68 and was VERY different when my dad was in. I just wish we both could have swapped stories about those days. I sure miss him.

One of the most impressive experience I had during boot was rifle qualification. Getting to the 500 yard line, hitting black center mass, all day long. I shot expert, and even improved when i got out in the fleet. With a open site weapon!

A very important decision that has to be made by you alone. Very hard to change your mind once your there. Look into it and find as much info as you can gather. Know exactly what you want to do and what MOS you want. Once you know make sure everything that is offered and promised is in writing. Its a big step. Either way you go dont go in blind.

There is always going to be rivalry between the branches. Its what you make of it. Marines bootcamp is harder. All the branches know that. Join the branch you feel you will be happy with. Go to the recruiters office and talk to the Marines on leave from bootcamp and ask them questions as well as Soldiers. Maybe even Navy and Airforce. They all have something different to offer. Personally The Marines are the best. I had good times and bad times. But never the less. Best decision I ever made. Some Marines may not agree but I'm basing it on personal experience. My career and work ethic all came from serving in the Marines. I owe them that. Once again In basing on my experience not anyone elses.

This reminds me when I was growing up. I was born and raised on Air Force Bases. I remember soliders doing these drills.The sounds of their marching and their rifles in unison clanging and the sound of the wind blowing is a nice memory. I cant believe my grandpa did this in 1963 I remember once when I was a kid he took out his M-14 and still at over 60 years old still did it perfect after so many years he's 77 now and I'm very proud my grandpa earned the title Marine

It wasn’t until after I got discharged that I realized we weren’t the only ones being judged in final drill, the DIs were also being evaluated. They were given a list of commands to be executed and how well the platoon responded.

Close order drill is what seperates Marines from the other branches. Without even realizing it, it basically instills immediate response to orders. And this translates to the battlefield. I remember when I was in Iraq back in 2006. When we would catch fire or hit an IED our response to these situations was eerily robotic in a way. You respond without having to guess about it, and therefore things would run smooth and orderly.

I remember my platoon’s final drill. We were believed to be the platoon that would beat 3097, the ones who were just oh-so-much better than the other platoons in the company at everything. We were practicing almost all day every day for a week before final drill day, and we were PSYCHED out for it. And what did we do out there on Peatross? We shit the bed hard core as fuck. We got way too excited to blow 97 out of the water and it showed. Our cover and alignment got fucked, and our weapons angling at port arms became a huge cluster-fuck of barrels pointing in all kinds of directions. Moral of the story: don’t let confidence through preparation psych you out too much. You’ll overdo it and subsequently fuck everything up.

Plt 1015, 1st RTBN, April 1990. Initial and Final Drill winners. SSGT Moreno, SDI. The next closest platoon was 5 points behind us. No one could touch us. Our rifle manual sounded like one giant click. It even rained in MCRDSD of all things during the last part of the Final Drill. If you were there, that was greatness.

A couple of things about drill. Final Drill for a DI is like their Daytona 500 - it is revered. Drill for a platoon needs to be their Zen - it is the Platoon's identity in all the eyes of the other Di's an recruit Commanders. Drill is the foundation of following instructions, listening to commands, team work as a unit, and above of all pride as a Corps. Drill is the #1 thing a DI's is graded on in the eyes of God and everybody.

I was there in '91. My platoon was out in 3rd phase BWT. We had been doing all sorts of live fire drills using blanks that day. Right after afternoon chow our Senior had us doing drill for a while, ya' know, just keeping our chops up. Earlier I had made sure I had an empty magazine in my rifle. So, our Senior called Inspection Arms. As I was performing I was wondering if all the recruits had made sure they had an empty mag in their rifle. Well, I got my answer 3 seconds later.......POP! Ooops somebody had a magazine with blanks in their rifle! It was 15 minutes of fucking insanity! All our Drill Instructors appeared from nowhere...screaming. A fucking DI from a different platoon was screaming at the guy. I thought it was funny. They pitted him for about an hour. Ahhhh....good times..good times.

Went through boot camp in San Diego in 1961. We were issued the M1 Garand. When we did close order drill and manual arms you could really hear the wood being slapped and the heels of the boondockers digging in. My platoon’s drill instructors used to always say we were the dumbest platoon to go through boot camp but the strongest platoon because we always did great on the PFTs.

I went thru Parris Island in '75 and our Final Drill Competition was done in front of our Battalion Commander (3rd Battalion) with his staff and other officers and dignitaries. PI was a different world back then and much more harsh and brutal, we had a recruit jump front our 3rd floor barracks down to the hard deck in 1st phase who we presumed died but the DI's never said a peep about it. My Platoon started at 79 recruits and we graduated 42 but some F'n how at Final Drill Comp we still had one shit bird in our platoon that had caused untold pain on the parade deck learning close order drill. During Drill Comp your Sr. DI would be handed a card with the executions listed and our first was "Platoon atten hut! then Right Face", but our DI made a mistake and said "Platoon Atten Hut! I find myself enjoying watching the taking of young kids and turning them into young men. Staff Sgt Warner, staff Sgt Ouhmak, and Sgt Burnett, I will never forget. We were the best. I am greatful for their time AND still carry on many things I learned there. The corps made me a better man. My father was wwii, decorated MARINE, my brother a Vietnam war Marines and myself, just keeping watch with every other marine that carries that title. GOD bless you all, our platoon still rocks, platoon 2070.

As a retired US Marine Infantry Unit Leader (0369), I still remember every drill move at my current age of 74. In 1977, I mastered the Drill Manual. Did you know the west coast Marines had one more movement then the east coast Marines? I was not a "Drill Master", but 3 Drill Instructors from OCS tested me while Chief Instructor (Gunny) at NCO School at Quantico. One of the prides of my career. I love Close Order Drill. in68 it was the most life changing thing to happen to me. it was terrifying, lack of sleep, constant yelling day and night, at lights out we ran laps in the barracks endlessly, did footlocker push up till we dropped. before daylight we were up and fed. 3 mile runs were the norm to start the day. drop outs were picked up by the corpsmen riding in a jeep after a DI reemed out the non hacker. it was endless and after a week we were like zombies, never thought of home due to being too tired and. having done it once would i do boot camp over again? HELL NO! still get that lump in my throat when i hear the hymn. Semper Fi

From 5 Oct - 21 Dec, 1964, we used M-14 in Plt 393. I spent 21 years as a 03. 14 years as a 0369. The I remember the Inspection Arms count changed when it came to the M-16. My Senior Drill Instructor was my original Marine hero. He was an Old School Sergeant with two hash marks and some campaign ribbons. It was my goal to master the Drill Manual at the time, and I did. I "moved" teams all the way up to a company from point to point. At 8th & Eye I had to learn Ceremonial Drill as a Platoon Sergeant and then for the Parade Staff (72 - 75). I use to eat close order drill for breakfast from Sea Duty to Division and in between. At PI our platoon didn't win Drill Comp because our final halt position was in a "DI Bow". We wanted to win so damn bad for our beloved Senior, who by the way told us from jump street he was going to graduate everyone if we didn't F-up. He picked up 80 and graduated 80. So, we wanted to get him Drill Comp.....he sent us "ladies in the barn" so many times until we got "his drill" done correctly. Watching this caused me to yell drill adjustments at my 55" TV 😂 You damn Skippy, at 77 I can conduct Close Order Drill 2 blocks away with a 0369 voice. #CallengeMe.

It’s weird to think I will never get these mornings back… the nostalgia and the vivid memories I have being isolated to such a small location, and having your life changed so measurably in what only retrospectively feels like an instant but in the moment felt like an eternity… makes me wanna do it all over again but my back has never been the same. If I were healthy I ponder where my place would have been in the corps.

I went to Navy RTC San Diego in 1973 and we drilled with the Springfield M1903A3. A couple years later, they stopped drilling with rifles all together. The Navy offered a guarantee A school at that time and the Marine Recruiter at our high school said the only thing the Marines guaranteed was boot camp, so Navy was for me. I was growing up on a dairy farm and I didn't want to be a farmer.

Great to see as an old Marine...so many changes since. Noticed just a few besides the new utilities...allowed to blouse trousers (do they still use the little green bungees with hooks on the end?). Looked like they starched their 8-points (was a privilege back in my day). Even though we had 14's back then, are they allowed scoped 16's as a recruit? And finally, what the Hades are those wide green utility belts they're wearing? Also, I did enjoy the small example of individual per 'Column' marching....so many of my fellow Marines hated the drill field, I loved it. But then, perfection is both a blessing, and a curse. Boot bands are still the same we've got options on what to use. Either the standard green, velcro wide strap, or the metal ones. When I went through we were issued the m16 with iron sights but for( up north for west coast) weapons and field training we were issued the ACOG scope it self. The wide belts are utility belts “war belts” don’t know the purpose as for drill other than keeping your canteens and aesthetic. I have to agree though I do miss drill especially rifle manual and the sound of a well driven heel.

It was a pretty good final drill. The racking of the charging handles had pretty horrid synchronization but rarely does a platoon nail that in boot camp. They did much better than my platoon in boot lmao

Close Order Drill motivates me. I served from Dec 72 to Aug 80 and was a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor with Kilo Co. 3rd Bn. From Feb 76 to May 78. I loved the F…ing Corps and the Corps loved F…ing me. All jokes aside, being a Marine and especially a Drill Instructor was the most rewarding thing I ever did. That even beats 32 years in law enforcement. I am proud to say that my 3 sons were also Marines and I now have 1 grandson in the Corps and one in the Navy. Not sure how that happened! SEMPER FI and God bless the Marine Corps!

I served from 88 - 92. If you watch a final drill video from even 20 years ago, there is a distinct difference in the precision and rigidness of the recruits. These guys look softer and less put together than boots of yesteryear. This is final drill from 2008, what a difference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gseNZnC9nEg . And what is going on with scopes? Are they trained to used iron sights?
