"Handful of Soul"
When the producers and Mario decided together the repertoire to be performed, Mario doubted he might be able to reproduce stylistically songs of the classic American repertoire such as “Slow Hot Wind” and “On A Clear Day”, or even “A Handful Of Soul”. The result instead can be stunning to most. In this album, not only he delivers a very convincing interpretation but his voice adds a different colour to the music. In the past few years Mario collaborated with Alessandro Magnanini (Was-A-Bee), multi-faced musician as well as excellent arranger. With Alessandro, Mario co-wrote two authentic gems “No Mercy For Me” and “This Is What You Are”. The latter was released as a single and licensed on various compilations, gaining enough success. Whilst “No Mercy For Me” reveals Mario’s true soul of a crooner, “This Is What You Are” went on air in U.K. on heavy rotation in Norman Jay’s program Giant 45 for BBC London. Whereas in Italy it was programmed by RMC and later became the music to the network’s corporate TV commercial. Another unreleased track is “Never Die”, wrote by Marco Bianchi and Paolo Fedreghini (of duo Fedreghini-Bianchi, as well as The Invisible Session), produced on the blueprint of “This is What You Are” yet a fine piece of vocal jazz with fascinating harmonies and captivating solos. Tributes to rock-blues, soul-blues and rhythm-blues follow respectively in the shape of “I Can’t Keep From Crying Sometimes” by Al Kooper, a ¾ on the trail of Deirdre Wilson Tabac where Mario’s soulful passionate signing shines throughout the song; “I’m Her Daddy” originally by the one and only Bill Withers and “No Trouble on The Mountain” by L.C Cook, another marvellous tune convincingly covered by Mario’s unique voice. Quite interesting is the version he sang of “A Child Runs Free” a modern Bossa in perfect Schema style, just like the samba “Rio De Janeiro Blue”.

Hold me when I'm sad
Take my eyes to look around
Take my ears to listen to the stars
This is what you are
Knock me down
Knock me out
But when you hold me in your arms
I can just forget the tears I've cried
This is what you are
This is what you are
Write your number on my wall
It's all you gotta do
Carve your shadow on my soul
even when you break my heart in two
This is what you are
La, la
This is what you are
Take me up and let me down
Hold me when I'm sad
Take my eyes to look around
Take my ears to listen to the stars
This is what you are
Knock me down
Knock me out
Make me feel shy
But when you hold me in your arms
I can just forget the tears I've cried
This is what you are
Say la, la
This is what you are
La, la
This is what you are
The lyrics of Mario Biondi's song "This is What You Are" describe a relationship in which the person being addressed is the constant source of their partner's happiness, comfort, and security. The first verse talks about the singer's partner being able to bring them up when they're feeling down by holding them and helping them see the beauty around them. This theme continues in the chorus, where the singer declares that their partner is what makes them feel safe and whole, even when they're knocked down or feeling sad. The second verse goes deeper into this idea, describing how the partner can make the singer feel shy or vulnerable, but when they hold them, everything else falls away, even the tears they've cried.
The bridge of the song takes a slightly different turn, addressing the more difficult aspects of the relationship. The singer asks their partner to "write their number on their wall," or in other words, to make a commitment to their relationship that is visible and lasting. They also ask their partner to "carve their shadow on their soul," even if they hurt the singer by breaking their heart. It's clear that the singer believes their partner is worth the risk, because they are the source of so much joy and comfort in their life.
