After these two bands broke up, singer/guitarist Davey von Bohlen, drummer Dan Didier (of The Promise Ring) and bassist Eric Axelson (of The Dismemberment Plan) hooked up and started a band called In English. The group quickly signed a deal with the record label,ANTI-, and hired J. Robbins to produce their record. Robbins had previously produced records for both The Promise Ring and The Dismemberment Plan. After delivering the record to ANTI-, the label heads decided to pass on the record. The band changed their name to Maritime and signed with DeSoto Records. The band went on tour and self-released an EP called Adios on their own label, Foreign Leisure. On April 1, 2004 the band released their debut full-length album, Glass Floor on Desoto Records.
On February 6th, 2006, Eric Axelson announced he was leaving the band. He was replaced on bass guitar by Justin Klug.
Their second album, We, the Vehicles, was released April 18th, 2006 to wide critical acclaim along with a third, Heresy and the Hotel Choir in October 2007 on Flameshovel Records.
In 2011 Maritime returned with the album Human Hearts, featuring the single "It's Casual."
Magnetic Bodies/Maps of Bones was released in 2015.

Twins
Maritime Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In my cap and raincoat
Are we just a pile of hearts
With the staggered starts and bones that wander
Over roads have been used
Now the highways are bruised and cars get tired
So I could be jobless and nameless
Well thank goodness for singing in the city
We could be twins
Everybody looks like my friends
I find I'm naming the trees as we're passing
Like Richard, king of captains
All the things that we make
With the functions that fake us out with fiction
Until we are twins
And everyone looks like my friends
We could be twins
Everyone looks all pretend
We could be twins
Everyone looks like my friends
Yeah we could be twins
Everyone looks so pretend
Yeah we could be twins
Everyone looks like my friends
And we could be twins
We could be twins
The song "Twins" by Maritime depicts the feeling of isolation and the desire for belongingness. The lyrics begin with the singer humming the songs of Paul Simon, signifying a sense of nostalgia and perhaps a longing for a time when things were simpler. The lines "Are we just a pile of hearts/ With the staggered starts and bones that wander" suggest a feeling of aimlessness and confusion. However, the singer finds solace in the act of singing in the city, which suggests that despite the uncertainties, there is still hope for connection and fellowship.
The idea of "twins" is a recurring theme in the song. The lyrics mention how "everyone looks like my friends" and how "we could be twins", which can be interpreted as a desire for similarity and companionship. The names mentioned in the lyrics, such as Paul Simon and Richard, suggest a desire for familiarity and a sense of connection to the people that one admires.
The song also touches on the idea of artificiality and the struggle to distinguish reality from fiction. The lyrics mention "All the things that we make/ With the functions that fake us out with fiction", indicating that society has constructed a façade that undermines true connection and fulfillment. However, the singer still desires to find people who are genuine and who they truly connect with.
Overall, "Twins" explores themes of isolation, longing for connection, and the difficulty of distinguishing real from fake in a society where artificiality reigns supreme.
