I was fully Clemson in this one but see where OSU has some gripe. I honestly thought them calling the fumble a catch in real time was crazy though. My problem is the targeting call. I see Lawrence duck into the hit. And I don't like that call 99% of the time anyway. Great game.

But the Clemson player yanking the Ohio State dude down by his face mask right in front of a Ref was inexcusable as was the fumble return for TD. There were just too many obvious blown calls for me to ever think that game was called fairly.

Clemson got hit by that rule in the LSU game as well, but nobody bitched about it. Is it a crappy rule? Yes. It needs to be revised...again. But until then, they’ll call it like it is.

All the wr had to do was run the route as called and at the least they don't give the ball over to Clemson ending the game. Says a lot with Clemson having been an extremely gifted team in their own right. Got a feeling we will be seeing these two clash again in the near future

What I've seen this year is that a field that's indoors was slippery (during the Ohio State and Clemson game) I seen a ref flip a coin and catch it before said game. No other ref done that. I watched the Super Bowl. Coin hit the ground. Never seen a guy in the booth become so angry for a call to be flipped (that fumble after the catch). Same guy changed 2 calls that several refs on the field didn't call at all. No play done by Clemson was reviewed all game (that targeting on Dobbins was the clear definition of that rule). Clemson scored 21 points from game-altering calls. Before that targeting call on Wade. Clemson never saw their own 30 yard line. They won. I can accept defeat. I will not accept how Ohio State had zero game-altering calls to benefit them. Meanwhile, Clemson fans were outraged by the OPI and targeting calls against LSU. Irony and hilarious. I'm good, man. Lol

To me (75-year-old) there's an AWFUL lot of pushing, grabbing & and various degrees of "touching" allowed to defensive backs along a receiver's route, and it makes it difficult to see when an unfair defensive action (and offensive action by receiver) actually occurs. Drives me crazy.

Concept of unfair advantage is used in judging the legality of most contact observed in the games. Consistency is key. When calls get or appear inconsistent is when it gets frustrating.

Kind of like basketball when the guard has ball, turns his back and maneuvers, it's deemed appropriate and fair for defender, not knowing where the heck ball carrier is going, to have SOME way to gauge. According to the announcers it now is legal to grab a handful of jersey as long as you don't pull on it. Well grabbing a jersey is pulling on it. I guess it's left to the ref to decide how much pulling is too much pulling, which is pretty ridiculous, and impossible in most cases to objectively decide.

Incredible that Etienne will be coming back for his senior year. Both teams played well, OSU moved the ball well. Clemson did not dominate this game offensively but their D played was pretty good.
Both teams played very well. This was probably THE best College game of the year.

I’ve watched this game three times, once real time and twice on YouTube. OSU claimed they were robbed, but Clemson won this hard fought victory straight up. IMHO one of the most competitive college football games ever played.

straight up? that "incomplete pass" was the worst missed call i've seen watching football since the missed PI in the Saints-Rams NFC Championship a few years ago. not to mention the phantom PIs on Ohio State to start the 3rd. I give Clemson credit for their redzone defense but that incomplete call would've changed momentum the same way the Wade ejection did.

If OSU used more 5 or 6 man protection and ran the TE and RB out on routes more than they max protected and only ran 3 guys on routes they would have scored more points.
The max protections often back fired and invited blitzers and demanded that not only everyone won their blocking assignment but also the WRs had to beat a CB and a Safety in coverage. Max protecting a lot gets you sacked and can also lead to ints ... 5 man protections give you more throwing options, running lanes, and reduces the odds of everyone being covered. A lot of OSUs successful passing plays were 5 man protections.

OSU played tough, they usually have some great teams but I didn’t except them to play that against Clemson. Clemson is a very good and well coach team, and obviously so is OSU..Definitely can’t say they haven’t played a high caliber team now. They were primed from the beginning. It looked like any one of those teams could have won especially toward the end of the game. Great great game, hats off to both teams

Both teams played well, but I really appreciate how well Clemson played. We knew what Ohio State was about b/c they played a few decent/ranked teams, but Clemson really “showed”. It took them most of the first half to get reaquaintted with the speed of another good team (no offense ACC), but once they woke up, they balled out.

Excellent..!!! One play, and one bad call changed the complexity of an entire game. I don't like either team and so this is about as unbiased as it gets. What irks me is how one bad call can change the entire tide of a game, a flag wasn't even thrown on the play that I could see from the video. Weird.

An interesting observation. Frank Soruch, an assistant to Tom Osborne at Nebraska, inherited a fine team when named head coach and had an exceptional first year. After that, it was all downhill.

Larry Coaker, an assistant at Miami under Butch Johnson, inherited an exceptional team an won a National Championship his first season. After that, it was all downhill.

To put this in perspective it took (1. Fields on a bum knee 2. Dobbins injury 3. Shaun Wade ejected 4. Dropped Td passes 5. Huge momentum changing targeting call for 3rd down conversion leading to score 6. Roughing the punter on 4th and 6 that arguably could have been running into kicker for only 5 yard penalty 7. Overturned def TD) for Clemson to win that game by 6 points. It was literally the perfect storm aided by horrible referees from the replay booth. OSU loses that game with a huge asterisk*. OSU was clearly the better team but lost the game. I think they would have gone on to beat LSU with their pass rush and dbs...

It pained me to watch any highlights from this game, if I were to watch any at all. I'm at the point now where I'm going to re-live this game even though my team was on the losing end. I'm really upset about the officiating. But it is what it is. This game certainly lived up to the hype and raw tension leading up to game time. This game probably should have gone down as one of the greatest games in history, but with all the botched calls and what not it was just another game it seems. Maybe not for CU fans. Time to see how Ohio State responds next season.

That "targeting" penalty on trevor lawrence when Clemson was down 16-0 totally changed momentum. Fuck these new age penalties.

This Game is a Perfect example of how a Team that thought and deserved a win, were denied, because of the way the Referees and replay officiating took control of the game. The Buckeyes were playing the Tigers, the Referees, and the Replay Office who review crucial plays. It proves a point though. I've seen it in NCAA Basketball officiating too. The complete rhythm and momentum of a team can be changed by the officiating. I'm holding back my true thoughts, because I'm still really mad and angry about this game. Ohio State Buckeyes should've been playing LSU for the National Championship.

Remember Oregon destroyed Florida State in the first playoff similar to LSU to OU then lost to OSU in the championship game. Clemson has a serious chance of knocking off LSU in the championship game. The only weakness Clemson has is penetration on the D line to the QB. But they were just rushing 3 d lineman.

It is sad when poor officiating changes the outcome of any contest. Ohio State got robbed and points were taken off the board because of poor officiating. I agree that many factors ultimately affected the final score but one cannot ignore the consequence of taking six points away from any team when the call was admittingly wrong.

OSU had no moment at this point. They lost their momentum with 7 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. OSU must have punted 4-5 times in a row up until this point.

Ohio State has a fabulous team but they hadn't been in a close game all year and it looked like it at the end - defense gives up a 95 yard drive in 4 plays with the game on the line and the offense follows it up with a bad INT. If they had experience in those types of situations I think the outcome may have been different.

After watching this game twice, the referees completely screwed Ohio state out of this win. They were in control for the most part of the game. The bad calls and the ejection killed Ohio States momentum and kept a ton of legit points off the board. This game wasn’t nearly as close as the final score indicated. Ohio st whipped Clemson for 80% of the entire game. I’m not a Buckeyes fan but I would be fucking livid if I was.

I just realized something, but also might be because of how this was put together. At 25:52, when the ball is fumbled and he scoops it up and takes it back for a TD, then called it an “incomplete pass”, the next play, Ohio State has the ball. Time on the clock is 4:45 I think. Did the refs really give Ohio State the fumble, just not the TD, or is that just the editing?

Don't get mad but I am a Bammer: 1) whole Bama secondary out by game 4...all frosh secondary; 2) Both edge rushers gone for that game.

That was a disaster waiting to happen for bama but no one wanted to see it coming. Tua on 1 1/2 legs and no longer a dual threat QB (as he had been and was recruited to be...see him in that UGA title game off the bench- before they named an orthopedic wing after him at UAB Medical).

Last night was whole different deal. OSU had some tweaks but they were basically intact and played like a damned pro team nearly, hitting like they were on some weird roid rage drug. It was ugly and I thought they had k.o ed Stretch with that bullshit cheap shot...intended, btw, from what I learned to do JUST that (d/c for OSU had told them he had to be hit hard and often...well...it cost them and typical Buckeye fans, it ain't their fault).

Ya one of the reasons it rose so quickly in the elite bowl games is due to being free of conference ties. Usually conference ties is a good thing, but in the Fiesta Bowl's case, it's access to the to Phoenix metro gave it a great opportunity to rise quickly. 1987 Fiesta Bowl is the one that took it to the never level when Miami and Penn State, both being independent at the time and therefore had the freedom to pick which bowl it wanted to go, both chose to play each other in the Fiesta Bowl, making the Fiesta Bowl the defacto National Championship that year. It was a classic and the Fiesta Bowl has been right along the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, etc. ever since
