Heart In Motion
Mark Crisman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the car
On the drive back
Without you there
In the passenger side
In the dark
Haven't felt this
This way in
A very long time

Look at what you've done to me
It's not that typical
Tell me what you want it to be
Two lives in different places

You set my heart in motion
You set my heart in motion
I've been dead a long time
You came in and turned my life back around
You tore it apart
You set my heart in motion

Kinda scared
A bit uneasy
Should I do this
All over again
I believe
You'll be different
It's just that I have
Believed that before

It's not gonna be an easy ride
I'll say it right now, I'm difficult
But if you just give it some time
You'll see you're on a firm foundation

You set my heart in motion
You set my heart in motion
I've been dead a long time
You came in and turned my life back around
You tore it apart
You set my heart in motion

I hope that you won't give up
That you won't back down
It's kinda what I expect
Please prove me wrong
And build me up
It's why I'm in this

You set my heart in motion
You set my heart in motion
I've been dead a long time
You came in and turned my life back around

You tore it apart
You set my heart in motion

Overall Meaning

In the first stanza, the singer is driving without his/her significant other and is experiencing a mix of emotions in the dark. The singer hasn't felt this way in a very long time, possibly hinting at heartbreak from previous relationships. In the second stanza, the singer acknowledges that the other person has had an impact on his/her life and has set his/her heart in motion. The singer admits to being afraid and uncertain of beginning another relationship, but they are willing to give it a chance. The overall message of the song seems to be that despite past hurts and fears, love is still worth pursuing.

The chorus is impactful and is repeated throughout the song, indicating the depth of the impact the other person has had on the singer's life. The line "You came in and turned my life back around / You tore it apart" captures the paradoxical feelings of the singer; initially, the arrival of the other person caused disruption, but it ends on a positive note with the acknowledgement that it set the singer's heart in motion. The final stanza expresses the hope that the other person won't give up and will build the singer up, indicating the care and trust that has grown between them.

I just remember back in 2nd grade (or equivalent to it since I was in the special ed) when my friend wouldn't share his pretzel rod with me that day. A piece he was eating broke off and landed on the table. I picked it up and he scolded me upset that I had stolen from him.

He said that in real life they put people in the electric shock chair for stealing.

Well that put me in a Catatonic state. I was miserable all recess long and during Math class while the teacher read to us, I mesmerized drew a picture of someone in this so called electric shock chair.

After Math class though, my friend apologized.

But for the next few weeks I was obsessed over this electric chair and was telling everyone about it.

But still......
Just imagine being 9 years old and told that.

Save your pity for someone who deserves it. Ivon Stanley and his pal smashed an innocent man’s head in and buried him alive in a shallow grave. Their innocent victim, Clifford Floyd, was a hardworking decent father of young kids who had a loving wife. He was kidnapped, smashed in the head with a hammer, forced to dig his own grave, had his skull caved in with a shovel, and was then buried alive. The coroner said that Floyd choked to death on a mixture of his own blood and the earth surrounding his face. It was a brutal, sadistic, and heinous death. Don’t waste your time thinking about Ivon Stanley- he deprived a woman of her husband, and kids of their father.

Someone once said being put to death wasn't the punishment but rather the punishment was the hours leading up to it and the final walk towards it knowing there was nothing you could do..

Lets not forget it sometimes takes many years from the courtroom to the execution. Ivon Ray Stanley was arrested on April 14, 1976, two days after he committed murder.

Hours? Some people have been on death row 20/30 years or more.

Eric Shepherd

@dave h I was referring to the last few hours leading up to the execution
