Diamond is from Washington state and grew up in a small town outside of Seattle called Maple Valley. He blames the rain for his style of writing. Through all of the music he writes, Mark hopes to help those similar to him, giving them a moment to quiet their busy minds, even if its just for a moment.
Petrichor
Mark Diamond Lyrics

Like a shadow on the ground
Whispering ain't that funny now
Blinding lights
Where'd you go and hide
I don't see you when I open up the door
I still smell
It'll all fall down hold on tonight
Greatness grows
Where the soil bleeds the most
Rain down on me like the very last time
If a new age ripens
Can I keep holding
When the moonlight crescents
Is it worth the bear
If I new age ripens
Can I keep holding
When the moonlight crescents
Is it worth the bear
Darkness crawls
Like a shadow on the ground
Whispering it ain't that funny now
In these lyrics, Mark Diamond expresses a sense of darkness and uncertainty. He starts by describing how darkness creeps up like a shadow on the ground, metaphorically representing a feeling of negativity or sadness. The line "Whispering ain't that funny now" suggests that whatever was once amusing or enjoyable has lost its humor, possibly indicating a shift in the singer's perspective or emotional state.
The following lines, "Blinding lights, where'd you go and hide? I don't see you when I open up the door," depict a search for something or someone that seems to have disappeared. The "blinding lights" could symbolize hope, happiness, or even love, whereas the mention of not finding them when opening the door indicates a sense of longing or disappointment.
However, amidst the darkness, the singer still smells the petrichor outside. Petrichor refers to the pleasant earthy scent that arises when rain falls on dry soil. This imagery could represent a sense of renewal and growth, as well as a reminder that beauty can emerge even in challenging times. The line "It'll all fall down hold on tonight" suggests the need to persevere and hold on during difficult moments, as better things may be on the horizon.
The lyrics then explore the idea of a new age ripening. This could refer to a period of transformation and change, symbolized by the ripening of new possibilities. The singer wonders if they can continue to hold on during this transition, and questions the worthiness of enduring the challenges. The mention of the moonlight's crescent shape further emphasizes the idea of change and cycles.
Finally, the repetition of the line "Darkness crawls, like a shadow on the ground, whispering it ain't that funny now" reinforces the initial sense of darkness and the loss of amusement or humor. It suggests that despite the growth and potential represented by the petrichor and the new age ripening, the singer is still grappling with the struggles and uncertainties of life.
Overall, the lyrics of "Petrichor" touch on themes of darkness, longing, renewal, and existential questioning. The imagery used throughout the song paints a vivid picture of the singer's emotional journey and invites listeners to contemplate their own experiences of navigating through difficult times.
