Untitled Track
Mark E. Smith And Ed Blaney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The gentleman's in the lane
Spinning his hat on a cane
Stepping out, out for change
Good morning all, it's a beautiful day

The generals are winning a war
Seemed suicidal before
You came alone, now
I'll protect you, long as you stay

L.A.
Morning had to come
You'll be walking in the sun
Living in the day
But last night I was about to throw it all away

If patience started a band
I'd be her biggest fan
Look at me, I'm talking to you

I don't want the lead in your play

The star's just a part of the scene
The gentleman in green
Paying off, out on the street
I can't go home, it's not on my way

L.A.
Things are never done
Car's parked in the sun
Living in the day
But last night I was about to throw it all away
Last night I was about to throw it all away

Last night I was about to throw it all away
Last night I was about to throw it all away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mark E. Smith and Ed Blaney's "Untitled Track" shroud various themes of resignation, isolation, and angst. The opening stanza presents an image of a well-groomed man exhibiting a symbolic gesture with his hat. It seems like he is trying to garner attention and approval from the people around him, indicating his desperate desire for change. Meanwhile, the following lines describe a war where the antagonists are winning, but then there comes this hope-inspiring character who promises to protect someone if they stay. The mention of L.A. indicates that the setting of the song is somewhere in Los Angeles. The mood then transitions into a self-aware commentary where the singer admires patience as an attribute and expresses a willingness to let someone else lead.

As the song progresses, it highlights the contrast between day and night, where the morning seems to promise positivity with the sun shining bright. However, the previous night must have been a testing time for the singer as he confesses, "Last night I was about to throw it all away." The recurring theme of leaving something behind, whether it is personal demons or the fear of the unknown, is an underlying emotion that lingers throughout the track. The lyrics are impressionistic and open to interpretation, yet they efficiently capture the complexities of human emotions, thereby making the track a fascinating addition to any music aficionado's playlist.

My most treasured possession is the bongo my granny played when she was in The Fall.

@TravelatorH8r

Wow you're lucky I know there's a good chance that somebody's and sister has played in the fall due to the sheer amount of band members but man I am jealous

@FunkyMonk6

Let's not forget the great musicians who made up The Fall over 40 odd years

@blahblahoink

Someone turned up with the Bingo Masters/Repetition single when we were all sitting around on acid listening to Dark side of t' moon. I've never forgotten that wonderful moment. I met Mark in a pub in Brighton not long after (1980?) and had a couple of pints with him before he said 'right I'm off to do this gig then...are you coming?' I told him it was sold out (The New Regent in West Street) He took me up and got me in. Top man. Original. One off.

A world without MES is a place that is duller and more tedious. His words are forever in my head.

@linsayspence7070

Yeah he was the business
