Eitzel's first solo album was the (now elusive) cassette-only 'Mean Mark Eitzel Gets Fat' (1982), which pre-dates his AMC work. He released a solo live album, songs of love live in 1991, featuring raw and emotional acoustic versions of his best AMC songs. His first solo album proper was 1996's 60 Watt Silver Lining, a highly personal, jazz-inflected work.
He went on to release albums of varying styles and quality, including another difficult-to-find effort in Lover's Leap USA, produced as a tour-only CD and notable for including two songs which Eitzel's own sleeve notes instruct the listener to skip past. This was followed by 1997's West, a collaboration with REM's Peter Buck, and the stark and harrowing Caught in a Trap and I Can't Back Out 'Cause I Love You Too Much, Baby in 1998. 2001 saw him take a new electronic direction with The Invisible Man, followed in 2002 by two covers projects: Music for courage & confidence and The Ugly American, which included re-interpretations of American Music Club songs by Eitzel and a traditional Greek band!
american music club reformed in 2003, and released an album, Love Songs for Patriots, as well as touring the United States and Europe. Eitzel released new solo material in 2005, candy ass, which saw a return to the electronic experimentation of the invisible man. A new AMC record, The Golden Age was released in February 2008.

Go Away
Mark Eitzel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
is heavy with all the choice cuts
the Columbus God of Hope
twists a knife in your guts
and all we talk about
is how disappointed you are every day
a blank face on a child
who can't reply to anything you say
Go away
go away
go away
The prison guards just try and sell me
these little yellow pills
they say they'll cover up the pain
for a wound that never heals
and all I got
all I got was the last look
you wore on your face
and if I live to be a thousand
that's one thing I'll never replace
Go away
go away go away
go away go away
I know you've got a plank to walk
I know you've got a kite to fly
and I'll do everything I can
to help you say goodbye
just wanted to fill your soul with light
and free us both from the Ohio day
my touch just makes you draw
farther and farther
and farther away
Go away
go away
go away go away
go away
Go away
go away go away go away
go away go away
The lyrics to Mark Eitzel's "Go Away" tell a story of emotional pain and the desire to separate oneself from it. The butcher shop in the air, heavy with choice cuts, represents the abundance and excess in life that can weigh a person down. The Columbus God of Hope symbolizes the disappointments and hardships that twist like a knife in one's gut, leaving a sense of deep disappointment.
The song mentions the blank face of a child who cannot reply to anything that's said, which is a metaphor for the emotional distance between two people. The singer wants to help but realizes that it only makes things worse, causing the other person to draw away farther.
The prison guards try to sell the singer little yellow pills to cover up the pain, but the wounds never heal. The last look on the other person's face is something that will never be replaced, leaving the singer with a feeling of deep loss and sadness.
The repeated refrain of "go away" represents the central theme of the song, the desire to be free from emotional pain and hurt.
