Be There for Me
Marlene Brehm Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Solider dressed in army greens,
Goes down to one knee
Kiss his baby's boys cheek,
Hoping it's not the last time

Being strong he boards the plane,
Looking back he loses strength,
Prays to god for the first time,
Watch over them and make it alright

Softly he whispers, come in take over,
I can't do this on my own, and he lets go,
He says

Oh, I'm down on my knees,
Take me away
Oh, here are my hands,
I surrender my way
Oh, I lay down my life,
I give in today
Oh, all I need is for you
To be there for me

Past due bills and classifieds,
Her little girl keep asking why,
They came home to a foreclosure sign,
Mom's says it'll be alright

Deep inside she's struggling,
Weighted down can barely breathe
Looks up and says forgive me please,
I'm sorry I never believed

Softly she whispers, come in take over,
I can't do this on my own, and she lets go,

Oh, I'm down on my knees,
Take me away
Oh, here are my hands,
I surrender my way
Oh, I lay down my life,
I give in today
Oh, all I need is for you
To be there for me

Softly I whisper, come in take over,
Come in take over

Oh, I'm down on my knees,
Take me away
Oh, here are my hands,
I surrender my way
Oh, I lay down my life,
I give in today

Oh, all I need is for you
To be there for me

Overall Meaning

The song "Be There for Me" by Marlene Brehm tells two different stories of struggles and the need for someone to be there as a support system. The first verse describes a soldier who is leaving his family behind to go fight in a war. He kneels down to say goodbye to his baby boy, hoping it won't be his last time seeing him. He boards the plane with strength, but while looking back he realizes how hard it is for him to leave his loved ones behind, and he finally prays to God for help. The chorus then begins and he surrenders himself, laying down his life and asking for someone to be there for him.

The second verse focuses on a mother and her little girl who have come home to a foreclosure sign. She is struggling, weighed down, and can barely breathe. Her daughter keeps asking why they are in this situation but her mother tells her that everything will be alright. But deep down, she is struggling and asks for forgiveness for not believing enough in herself. The chorus repeats, but this time it is the mother who is whispering for someone to come in and take over.

The song represents a universal need for support and emphasizes the importance of having someone to lean on during the hardest times. It portrays the vulnerability and raw emotions that come with hardships and how asking for help doesn't make us weak, but rather it makes us stronger.
