False Friends
Marley Stephen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Friend I guess I misunderstood
Thought that we had mutual respect
Now I see the thanks that we get
So be careful who you choose as your friends
For they might let you down in the end
Just when I thought, a real good friend I found
Them let you down down down
They let you down down down
Them let you down down down
Down down down down down
So my son always bear in mind
A faithful friend is the hardest thing to find
It is better an open enemy
A false friend is the hardest thing to see
'Cause when times are good when the friends are plenty
In times of trouble, we're not one in twenty
Just when I thought, a real good friend I found
They pick you up to let you down, ah
We were friends, we were friends
Real good friends, we were friends
We were friends, we were friends
And I remember when
Just when I thought everything was good
My friend I guess I misunderstood
Thought that we had love and respect
But now I see the thanks that we get
So I'm careful who I choose as my friends
For they might let me down in the end
Just a thought, when I thought, when I thought
Them let you down down down
Them let you down down down
Them let you down down down
Down down down down down
They let you down down down
Them let you down down down
Them let you down down down
Down down down down down
We were friends, we were friends
Real good friends, real good friends
We were friends, we were friends
And I remember when were good friends
Real good friends
"False Friends" by Marley Stephens speaks of the repercussions of being too trusting and aligning oneself with the wrong people. The lyrics convey the disappointment and letdown that arise when one realizes that they have been betrayed by those who they thought had their back. Stephens muses on the significance of having true and faithful friends, the rarity of such friendships, and warns against the abundance of "false friends" that exist.
The first verse of "False Friends" describes the feeling of being let down by someone who one believed was a "real good friend." The next two lines shift the focus from the individual experience to a general admonition: "So be careful who you choose as your friends/ For they might let you down in the end." This serves as a warning to listeners to be discerning in their selection of friends. The chorus reinforces the message and serves as a catchy and memorable repetition: "Them let you down down down/ They let you down down down/ Them let you down down down/ Down down down down down." The second verse highlights the rarity of finding true friends and cautions against the danger of keeping company with false ones. The song concludes with the repeated refrain of the first verse, emphasizing the circular nature of the message.
Overall, "False Friends" is a cautionary tale about the importance of choosing one's friends wisely and being wary of those who may not have one's best interests at heart. Stephens' emotive delivery strengthens the theme of the song, giving it a sense of universality that can resonate with anyone who has ever felt the sting of betrayal by a friend.

I just turned 28 and I'm only now realizing this after everyone continuously warned me. I'm happy I didn't listen in a way because I needed to feel the burn of betrayal. People mostly let you down at some point. Wish I would have just stayed close to God instead. God NEVER lets you down. Real talk.
